(AP) ? James Rizzi applied his playful, cartoon-like art style to unusual projects worldwide, from Volkswagen Beetles and Japanese train ads to cow sculptures in New York and the front page of a German newspaper.

His creations included images for German postage stamps and a tourist guide to New York published this year. He was the official artist for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and soccer World Cup games in France.

"With his art, what you see is what you get," said Alexander Lieventhal, an executive at Art 28 GmbH & Co. in Stuttgart, Germany, which manages and sells Rizzi's work. "Any child can look at it and understand what he's trying to convey: a celebration of life."

Rizzi, a native of Brooklyn, died Monday at his New York studio at age 61. He had a heart condition, Lieventhal said.

Rizzi studied art at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where his groundbreaking techniques began with three-dimensional constructions that evolved from a youthful failure.

For his classes in painting, printmaking and sculpturing, he had to hand in work for grades in all three subjects. But Rizzi had time to complete only one: a twice-printed etching, with parts of one cut out and mounted on top of the other using wire.

Lieventhal described it as a "combination of print and sculpture that produces the 3D effect."

Rizzi stuck with the novelty, nurturing it when he returned to New York, where he made a name as a street artist with a mural.

In 1976, he participated in the exhibition "Thirty Years of American Printmarking" at the Brooklyn Museum. Four years later, he designed the cover for the first album of a new wave band called the Tom Tom Club.

Rizzi ventured into surprising aesthetic areas.

In New York, he created a limited-edition of the MetroCard subway fare-paying system for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. His designs also appeared in "CowParade," an exhibit of fiberglass sculptures displayed in New York public spaces.

Rizzi enjoyed some of his biggest successes in Germany and Asia.

There, he designed the ring coat for boxer Henry Maske, china for the Rosenthal company, the front page of a newspaper in Hamburg and some vehicular art ? a toy-size fire engine and three versions of the 1999 Volkswagen "New Beetle."

In 1996, Lufthansa airlines commissioned him to decorate a jet with stars, birds and travelers.

A school in Duisburg is named for Rizzi; in 2001 came the opening of his office building in Braunschweig, dubbed the "Happy Rizzi House." Last year, an oval stained-glass ceiling the "Rizzi Dome" was unveiled at one of Europe's biggest shopping malls, in Oberhausen.

He created ads for the Japanese Railway, and when he boarded planes in Germany, "the flight attendants asked for his autograph."

Rizzi was divorced and had no children. Survivors include his mother, a brother and a sister.

Boycott Apple, Microsoft The SOPA Supporters

Go Daddy burned their fingers when they decided to sell their soul to the devil. More than 21,0000 conscious users migrated to other services. Go Daddy changed its 'stand' the same day, which seems to be nothing more than PR strategy as Go Daddy 'worked' on crafting this act. If they oppose the act, they must run a campaign to ensure that SOPA is not passed. That's what it means by 'opposing' the bill and not by secretly supporting it via PIPA and Protect IP. Go Daddy paid heavily as 'informed' and concerned Go Daddy users revolted and threatened to switch to other registrars.

How about the other SOPA supporters? Will you be boycotting them? There are two monopolies which are endorsing SOPA, Apple and Microsoft. Apple has not said anything in support of SOPA. But, the company either way doesn't care about anything beyond its own profits. Apple itself is a censor police where it runs its own version of SOPA. Microsoft, on the other hand, has been openly supporting such biils.

Microsoft's Brad Smith who blushes every time the company forces a player to sign an Android contract on the basis of bogus patents took pride in supporting the act. Smith wrote on Microsoft's blog:

"We support the goals and approach of this important legislation, and urge the committee to report it."

He concludes:

"Microsoft is a company built on innovation and its protection through intellectual property rights, and we are committed to helping ensure that copyright is respected in the on-line environment. We look forward to working with others as this bill advances toward enactment."

Microsoft and Apple are the abusive monopolies which are endorsing and supporting these dangerous bills. The 'informed and concerned' Internet community revolted against Go Daddy and brought it to its knees. Are you ready to boycott Microsoft and Apple?

Republic Wireless changes stance: unlimited will be truly unlimited, 'no thresholds' or asterisks

Credit where it's due: Republic Wireless has just made an about-face on the only major downfall we saw in its new wireless proposition. While most of the big boys have had an asterisk by "unlimited" for years on end, these guys were called out as being "deceptive" due to its convoluted "fair use policy." Instead of revising it, the upstart carrier is just throwing it out. Completely. "From today, Republic Wireless is all-in." That's according to a refreshing blog post tossed up on its site hours ago, where we're told that it's eager to accept feedback and adapt as necessary. Looking for more proof? How's about this:

"Rather than revising our fair use policy, we've decided not to have one at all. There will simply be no thresholds, and no risk of losing service. We're doing away with all of that to keep all of the focus instead on where it really belongs: Creating a new wireless future together. A future that is simple to understand, unfettered to use, and an amazing value for all. That's what we started down this path to do. That's where the power of this vibrant community, dynamic WiFi ecosystem and revolutionary technology should be invested."

In a world filled with GoDaddys, PayPals, SOPAs and CarrierIQs, it's downright incredible to see a 180 in this direction. And yes, as part of that legal amendment, everyone who has purchased or purchases a phone during beta will be guaranteed the opportunity to enjoy unlimited service, without fear of cancellation, until the end of beta. The only snippet you should know about is the "unacceptable use" clauses, which state that you can't resell Republic's service or leave the phone "always on" as a conduit for other uses obviously beyond what would be normal for a personal smartphone; wildly enough, the outfit has promised to "reevaluate those provisions, too." Three cheers for listening skills, eh?

Twelve charged with hate crimes in Amish beard cutting (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? A federal grand jury in Ohio returned a seven-count indictment on Tuesday charging 12 members of an Amish splinter group with hate crimes following a spate of beard cutting attacks on fellow Amish in the state.

The charges related to five separate assaults between September and November. They allege the defendants, 10 men and two women, used scissors and electric clippers to snip hair from the victims, with whom they had religious disputes.

The actions of the group were considered especially egregious because once married, Amish men typically do not trim their beards and Amish women do not cut their hair for religious and cultural reasons.

"For nearly 500 years, people have come to this land so that they could pray however and to whomever they wished," Steven M. Dettelbach, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, said in a statement.

"Violent attempts to attack this most basic freedom have no place in our country," he added.

Among defendants charged under the Hate Crimes Prevention Act were Bishop Samuel Mullet Sr., his two sons Johnny and Daniel Mullet and son-in-law Emanuel Shrock.

The indictment also charged defendants with each assault, and Bishop Mullet and three others with concealing evidence, including a camera, photographs, and medication that was allegedly placed in the drink of one of the assault victims.

Bishop Mullet was accused of orchestrating the beard-cuttings as revenge for being shunned by the Amish community.

He also was accused of forcing extreme punishments on sect members who defied him, including making them sleep for days at a time in a chicken coop, the FBI said.

Authorities said conversations recorded at the Holmes County jail before federal charges were brought alerted authorities that he was planning more attacks.

The most serious charges in the case could bring a maximum sentence of life in prison for conviction.

Rhapsody soars past a million paying customers, president Jon Irwin shaves his head in celebration

Whatever Spotify can do, Rhapsody can do better? Not quite, but it's getting there. While the former cruised past 2.5 million paying customers last month, Rhapsody has just announced that it has "gone platnium." It's now serving a cool million paying subscribers, right on the heels of its ten-year anniversary. The company's delivering around ten million songs per day, while making itself available on over 60 devices. What's next? Well, president Jon Irwin has to grow his locks back (seriously!), and we're guessing it'll try to lock down a few more carrier partnerships as the months drag on. When pinged for comment, Billy Corgan said: "I'm on vacation."

The Iraq War was Justified (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The last American soldiers are departing Iraq, leaving the Iraqi people a republic that has been won with considerable blood and treasure. Whether they can keep that republic on their own is still a question unanswered.

There is another question, perhaps inevitable, being asked. Was it worth it?

The New York Times, of course, naturally says not. One would expect the left leaning Times to come to that conclusion. But one has to consider that in the nine years of campaigning in Iraq, from the moment the first armored formation crossed the border with Kuwait to the moment the last soldiers returned, 4802 coalition troops, including 4484 Americans, were killed, according to Icasualties. The monetary cost was $800 billion, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

In determining whether the Iraq War was worth it, one needs to make an exercise into the counter factual. The question to be asked is, what if we had not invaded Iraq and attempted to continue the policy post Gulf War of containing Saddam Hussein?

WikiLeaks revealed, according to the New York Post, that Iraq possessed chemical weapons when the coalition troops entered that country in 2003. Weapons caches have been found for years since the invasion. That Iraq moved large amounts of WMDs to Syria in advance of the invasion remain a matter of dispute, according to the Washington Times. Barack Obama's own Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, believes this took place. Satellite imagery of truck convoys suggests that something was moved into Syria just before the invasion.

It is not unreasonable to assume that had the Saddam Hussein regime survived, it would have been armed with chemical weapons. One could also imagine such a regime reconstituting its nuclear bomb program after the U.N. inspection regime collapsed. How soon afterwards Iraq could have obtained nuclear weapons would depend on how soon it could have obtained fissile materials.

Could a failure to put an end to Hussein's regime in 2003 have resulted in a worst outcome than the eight and a half year long insurgency that followed? A case can be made that a Saddam Hussein regime that survived into the second decade of this century would have been armed with chemical and nuclear weapons and would have been willing to use them to advance Hussein's dream of hegemony in the Middle East. The Iraq War may well have prevented this nightmare.

Italy's Monti faces confidence vote on austerity (Reuters)

ROME (Reuters) ? Italy's government faces a confidence vote in parliament on Friday, called to speed up approval of a 33-billion euro ($43 billion) austerity package intended to restore financial market confidence in the euro zone's third largest economy.

Prime Minister Mario Monti's cabinet of unelected technocrats has the support of an overwhelming majority of members in both houses of parliament. This means Friday's vote in the lower Chamber of Deputies, expected to be held sometime around 1230 GMT, should pass easily.

The austerity plan will then move to the Senate, where a similar vote is expected to be held before Christmas, marking the final passage of a decree law that went into effect on December 4 but needed parliamentary approval within 60 days.

Monti's government was appointed last month to face a collapse in market confidence that put Italy at the heart of the euro zone debt crisis. He has raced to push through the package of tax increases, spending cuts and pension reform aimed at meeting Italy's goal of balancing its budget in 2013.

However, analysts say rising borrowing costs and the prospect of a fast-deepening recession still threaten to undermine Italy's deficit cutting efforts, while much of the country's fate is out of its hands, as investors react to a lack of decisive action by European leaders.

Monti's government has called the confidence votes to curtail debate on dozens of amendments to the law, many of them tabled by the opposition Northern League party.

Before Friday's vote, Monti warned that the solution to the crisis must be through a united approach rather than an attempt by northern European countries to blame those on the southern periphery - a thinly veiled criticism of Germany and its emphasis on budget rigor rather than measures to stimulate growth.

Europe's response "should be wrapped in a long-term sustainable approach, not just to feed short-term hunger for rigor in some countries," Monti told a conference of senior international financial officials in Rome.

"To help European construction evolve in a way that unites, not divides, we cannot afford that the crisis in the euro zone brings us ... the risk of conflicts between the virtuous North and an allegedly vicious South," he added.

On Thursday Emma Marcegaglia, head of the national employers' group Confindustria, said Germany should abandon its "rigid" positions because the euro itself was at risk.

RECESSION

Monti's predecessor, Silvio Berlusconi, had urged a confidence vote, saying his PDL party - the biggest in parliament - would support the government out of a sense of responsibility, not because it agrees with all the sacrifices being asked of Italians.

Both PDL and the centre-left Democratic Party have misgivings about parts of the bill but cannot sabotage the government for fear of unleashing an economic catastrophe that probably would lead to Italy defaulting on its debt.

Underlining the depth of the crisis, Confindustria forecast on Thursday that the Italian economy would shrink 1.6 percent next year, slashing its previous estimate of 0.2 percent growth,

and said the country was already in recession.

It said even this forecast was based on Italian bond yields dropping to below 5 percent by April compared with around 7 percent now - the level at which Ireland, Greece and Portugal were forced to take bailouts.

Such a rescue for the much bigger Italian economy would probably overwhelm Europe's defenses, which is why the country is in the frontline of the euro zone crisis.

The Northern League heckled Monti in parliament this week and held up placards saying: "This is not a budget, but a hold-up." They also tried to obstruct the calling of the confidence vote by filibustering in the chamber before Speaker Gianfranco Fini cut them short.

RIT and PPC Corp. to produce sensor that detects telecommunications equipment failures

Deterioration and damage to cellular telecommunications cables cost organizations and customers millions in lost revenue and services in the always-on digital economy. A new sensor device, smaller than a quarter, might alleviate some of the impact.

Researchers at Rochester Institute of Technology and PPC Corp. have developed the Smart Connector, a new sensor that once installed in the connecting units of coaxial cables can provide information about equipment damage and pinpoint the exact location through self-diagnosing technologiessome of the most advanced in the field today.

The sensor is one outcome of corporate research and development initiatives established at RIT that have grown over the past few years. The university and PPC Corp. signed a licensing agreement in June. Both parties are in the process of final testing and technology transfer, says Robert Bowman, professor of electrical and microelectronic engineering in RIT's Kate Gleason College of Engineering.

The university demonstrated the feasibility of the technology and is working with PPC to further test the manufactured product, Bowman explains. "It's one thing to conduct laboratory testing and demonstrate viability, it's another thing to get it into a product. PPC worked very closely with us during this research effort, and we'll work with them as they try to integrate this technology into their product line."

Bowman and his research group worked with Noah Montena, principal engineer at PPC, a Syracuse-based telecommunications radio-frequency, or RF, connector equipment company, to design the sensor-disc system. The system monitors the primary failure modes in RF cables. Each sensor-disc contains a unique site identifier, monitors critical conditions and reports the sensor status using a technique called back scatter telemetry. Each smart connector is capable of activating or powering-down its energy capacity by extracting miniscule amounts of radio frequency energy from the coaxial cables.

"This technology is really exciting, and the impact it could have on the industry is only just becoming apparent," says Montena. "Up until now, connector and equipment failures could be detected only after tower capacity had been diminished, and only pinpointed on-site with the system shut down."

The sensors have been designed from the beginning with simplicity, robustness and cost-effectiveness in mind, and one of the advantages of collaborating on the research has been the communication of manufacturing considerations as design decisions get made, Montena adds. "Beyond cellular connectors, it is easy to imagine this technology finding a place in other high value, or 'can't fail' applications such as communications or internal networks in spacecraft or aircraft. I look forward to uncovering all the possibilities."
