BEIRUT (AP) ? U.N. observers have discovered 13 bound corpses in eastern Syria, many of them apparently shot execution-style, the monitoring mission said Wednesday.

The announcement comes days after a massacre in Houla, in the central Homs province, which killed more than 100 people and prompted worldwide condemnation against the regime of President Bashar Assad. The Syrian government denied its troops were behind the killings and blamed "armed terrorists."

The latest killings apparently happened in Deir el-Zour province. The corpses were found with their hands tied behind their backs, according to a statement by the U.N. mission. Some appeared to have been shot in the head from a short distance.

The head of the U.N. observer team, Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, said he was "deeply disturbed by this appalling and inexcusable act."

The violence in Syria is spiraling out of control as an uprising against Assad that began in March 2011 has morphed into an armed insurgency.

In the wake of the Houla massacre, the United States and several other countries expelled Syrian diplomats to protest the killings. Survivors blamed pro-regime gunmen for at least some of the carnage in Houla.

The U.N.'s top human rights body planned to hold a special session Friday to address the massacre. Violence also continued elsewhere unabated. Syrian forces bombarded rebel-held areas in the same province where the Houla killings occurred, although no casualties were immediately reported, activists said.

Damascus had said it would conclude its own investigation into the Houla deaths by Wednesday but it was not clear if the findings would be made public.

Syria's state-run media on Wednesday denounced the diplomatic expulsions as "unprecedented hysteria."

The United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria ordered top Syrian diplomats to leave on Tuesday.

Turkey, Syria's neighbor and a former close ally, joined the coordinated protest on Wednesday. Turkey has been among the most outspoken critics of the Assad regime. It closed its embassy in Damascus in March and withdrew the ambassador. Its consulate in Aleppo remains open.

The Foreign Ministry said it ordered the Syrian charge d'affaires and other diplomats at the Syrian embassy in Ankara to leave the country within 72 hours. The consulate in Istanbul will remain open for consular duties only.

The Foreign Ministry said it also reduced the number of its personnel in the consulate in Aleppo, Syria, on Wednesday.

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan also said new unspecified sanctions might be imposed against Syria in the coming days. The world "cannot remain silent in the face of such a situation," he said.

Japan also ordered the Syrian ambassador in Tokyo to leave the country because of concerns about violence against civilians. Japan's foreign minister, Koichiro Genba, said his country was not, however, breaking off diplomatic ties with Syria.

The announcements came a day after the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria ordered top Syrian diplomats to leave.

Syria's ally, Russia, criticized the diplomatic moves.

"The banishment of Syrian ambassadors from the capitals of leading Western states seems to us to be a counterproductive step," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said. He said the move closes "important channels" to influence Syria.

U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan met with Assad on Tuesday in Damascus to try to salvage what was left of his peace plan, which since being brokered six weeks ago has failed to stop any of the violence on the ground.

The Al-Baath daily, the mouthpiece of Assad's Baath Party, said Syria won't be intimidated by such "violent rhythms" and would remain standing in front of such "ugly, bloody and dramatic shows." It added that "Syria will not tremble as they think."

The government's Al-Thawra newspaper also blasted the Western decision, calling it an "escalation that aims to besiege Annan's plan and enflame a civil war."

Tensions have escalated as more information emerges about the May 25 killings in Houla.

The U.N.'s human rights office said most of the 108 victims were shot execution-style at close range, with fewer than 20 people cut down by regime shelling.

U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous said there are strong suspicions that pro-Assad fighters were responsible for some of the killings, casting doubt on allegations that "third elements" ? or outside forces ? were involved, although he did not rule it out.

Meanwhile, activists said Syrian troops shelled restive suburbs of Damascus and rebel-held areas in the central city of Homs on Wednesday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees said at least five people were killed in the Damascus suburb of Douma. Both groups had no details about casualties in Homs, which is the provincial capital of the province that includes Houla.

The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Marine Gen. John Allen, read the 23-year-old's letter during a Memorial Day service Monday in Kabul in memory of all the troops who have died in the country since the war started in 2001.

"Today we remember his life and his words, for they speak resoundingly and timelessly for our fallen brothers and sisters in arms," said Allen, who also leads the NATO coalition in Afghanistan.

Stacey was on his fourth deployment to Afghanistan when he was killed on January 31 in Helmand province. The young Marine from Redding, California, told his family that he was motivated to fight in Afghanistan to protect the country's children and provide them the opportunity to go to school and live out their dreams.

"There will be a child who will live because men left the security they enjoyed in their home to come to his," Stacey wrote in his letter. "He will have the gift of freedom which I have enjoyed for so long myself, and if my life brings the safety of a child who will one day change the world, then I know that it was all worth it."

Stacey deployed to Afghanistan with the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 1st Marine Division out of Camp Pendleton, California.

At least 1,851 members of the U.S. military have died in Afghanistan as a result of the U.S.-led invasion in 2001, according to the latest Associated Press count.

Since Allen took over command in Afghanistan in July 2011, at least 251 American troops, 76 NATO coalition members and 1,296 members of the Afghan security forces have been killed in the country, he said.

During Monday's ceremony at NATO coalition headquarters, Allen helped lay a large wreath at the base of a pedestal holding a battlefield cross ? the traditional memorial to a fallen soldier, constructed using the troop's boots, rifle, helmet and dog tags. Allen stepped back and crisply saluted as Taps played over a speaker.

Support for the Afghan war has waned in the U.S. and other countries in the coalition as casualties have mounted and progress has seemed elusive. The U.S. plans to transfer security responsibilities to Afghan forces by the middle of 2013 and withdraw most of its combat troops by the end of the following year.

Despite the human cost of the war, Allen said the soldiers who have fallen did not die in vain.

"While our brothers and sisters fell in a place far from home, far from their families, the values for which they stood and for which they lived and for which they died occupy an enduring place in our hearts," said Allen. "Those values: freedom, duty, selflessness and sacrifice."

Smith, Jones' 'MiB3' zaps 'Avengers' out of No. 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The comic action heroes of "Men in Black 3" have taken over the weekend box office from the comic-book superheroes of "The Avengers."

According to studio estimates Monday, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones' latest "Men in Black" installment debuted with $70 million domestically over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, which proved unusually quiet at theaters for Hollywood overall.

Sony's "Men in Black 3" took over the No. 1 spot from Disney's "The Avengers," which had been the top flick for three straight weekends but slipped to second place with $46.9 million domestically.

"Men in Black 3" added $133.2 million overseas for a worldwide total of $203.2 million.

"We took over the world this weekend," said Rory Bruer, Sony's head of distribution. "It's so exciting to see Will and company back in this franchise. I certainly think that most people who've seen the film think it's the best of the franchise."

"The Avengers" raised its domestic total to $523.6 million, making it the No. 4 movie on the all-time domestic revenue chart and only the fourth film to top half a billion dollars. "The Avengers" will quickly pass the No. 3 film, "The Dark Knight" at $533.3 million, leaving only "Avatar" at $760.5 million and "Titanic" at $658.5 million ahead of it.

While it was a good start for "Men in Black 3" and another strong hold for "The Avengers," Memorial Day weekend was the slowest at theaters in more than a decade. Box-office tracker Hollywood.com estimates that overall domestic receipts for the four days will finish at $190 million, the lowest since Memorial Day weekend in 2001, when revenues totaled $185.3 million.

A year ago, Hollywood pulled in a record $276.3 million over Memorial Day weekend, when "The Hangover Part II" debuted with $103.4 million.

So far, Hollywood's summer season has been a one- or two-hit wonder, with only "The Avengers" doing blockbuster business and now "Men in Black 3" joining it with a solid opening.

Other May releases fell far short of expectations, with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" and the game adaptation "Battleship" swamped in the wake of "The Avengers." ''Battleship" launched in April overseas, though, where its $232 million haul helped make up for its meager $47.1 million total after two weekends domestically.

With domestic revenue at $4.3 billion so far this year, Hollywood remains on a record pace, receipts running 11.3 percent ahead of last year's, according to Hollywood.com. But revenue had been running 20 percent ahead of 2011's earlier this year.

Analysts have said this season could sweep past last year's summer revenue record of $4.4 billion on the strength of such releases as "The Avengers" and its superhero cousins "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Amazing Spider-Man."

Other than "The Avengers" and "Men in Black 3," summer is off to a slow start.

"After five weeks of summer, to only have two hits, that's tough," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "We definitely need to slingshot back. I was on record predicting record revenue for this summer, and now I'm getting worried. Summer is only 18 weeks, so we don't have a lot of time, but we do have a lot of big movies coming."

"Men in Black 3" reunites Smith's Agent J and Jones' K for their first big-screen adventure since 2002. The movie co-stars Josh Brolin as the younger Agent K, who is targeted for death by a time-traveling alien that Agent J chases back to the late 1960s.

The weekend's other new wide release, the Warner Bros. fright flick "Chernobyl Diaries," opened far back in the pack at No. 6, with $9.3 million for the four days.

In limited release, Focus Features' first-love comic drama "Moonrise Kingdom" got off to a huge start with $669,486 in four theaters, for a whopping average of $167,371 a cinema. That compares to an average of $16,478 in 4,248 theaters for "Men in Black 3."

Directed by Wes Anderson ("Rushmore," ''Fantastic Mr. Fox"), "Moonrise Kingdom" chronicles the relationship of a troubled boy and girl who run away together in the mid-1960s. The ensemble cast includes Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton and Tilda Swinton.

"The Avengers" has added $781.9 million overseas, giving it a worldwide total of just over $1.3 billion. The film is closing in on the No. 3 earner worldwide, last year's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" at $1.33 billion," again with only "Avatar" ($2.8 billion) and "Titanic" ($2.2 billion) ahead of it.

Still, many older films such as "Gone with the Wind," ''Star Wars" and "The Sound of Music" sold more tickets than "The Avengers" and other modern blockbusters. Rising admission prices mean today's movies make more money while selling fewer tickets, especially those that earn much of their cash from pricier 3-D shows, such as "The Avengers."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Monday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Tuesday.

London offers some of the best vegetarian food available. The capital?s veggie restaurants and caf?s?vary from offering light bites and food on the go to fine dining. They take their influences from the UK, the Mediterranean and of course South India amongst many other cuisines.

Many vegetarian places are hugely popular with veggies and non-veggies alike. As we draw to the end of national Vegetarian Week, we choose our own favourite restaurants.

Mildred?s
Mildred?s is one of the busiest and most popular vegetarian restaurants in London. Offering a diverse range of fresh and exiting food from Sri-Lankan to Mediterranean dishes and veggie burgers, it has become one of the most vibrant eateries in Soho, if not London.

Starters come in at around ?6 with mains costing between ?7 and ?11. For the quality of food, this is incredible value. Mildred?s don?t take table bookings, so you have to turn up on spec. This can mean a bit of a wait but with a great selection of drinks available and the promise of some fine food to come, its not too much of a hassle! The one room you can book is the upstairs private dining room, which has a collection of vintage porn on the walls.

Vanilla Black
Vanilla Black takes inventive vegetarian cooking to the highest level. This Michelin recommended restaurant originally opened in York before moving to its current location in the heart of the city. Since then it has delighted restaurant goers with its funky, modern take on vegetarian fine dining.

The mouth watering culinary creations on offer include such delights as ?fried mushroom mousse and pernod pancakes with whipped cider, fennel and butternut squash?.

A great location for a treat or a celebratory meal. The set menus help to provide a more affordable option. Lunch is available at ?18.50 for two course or ?23.50 for three.

The Gate
Hammersmith?s The Gate?has been a favourite with vegetarians since opening in 1989. Run by the brothers Adrian and Michael Daniel, the food is a fusion of Asian flavours mixed with Mediterranean influences. Starters cost around ?6 with mains varying from ?10 to ?15.

The restaurant also periodically offers cookery workshops and the chefs have published two recipe books. Due to the ongoing success of the place, the brothers are opening a second restaurant in Islington on 1 June.

Food for Thought
Covent Garden?s Food for Thought?is a well priced, friendly caf? that is a great option for a quick bite while out shopping. The menu changes regularly but often includes bean stews, quiches, burritos and much more. You can get a fantastic main with a plate stacked full of salads and sides for between ?5 and ?8.

As the caf? is quite small and gets pretty busy. It can be a good idea to go either a bit before or after the lunchtime rush.

Vitao
Serving up a buffet of wholesome salads, bean- and pulse-based concoctions and much else besides, this friendly and inviting vegan caf? has become a favourite among London?s vegetarians, and visitors to Soho alike.

All the food on offer is organic, wholesome and well priced. All you can eat costs between ?6 and ?9 depending on the time of day.

The Bonnington Caf?
The Bonnington Caf??is a community caf? run by a collective of volunteer chefs. The menu rotates with the cooks and there are normally a couple of different options available.

It started life as a squat caf? during the 1980s and has been a fixture of the community ever since. Starters and desserts cost ?3 with mains coming in at ?7. The Bonnington is a quirky, friendly and fun place to have a meal. It?s also good to support a local community enterprise that?s run on a not for profit basis.

With restaurants in Hammersmith, the West End and Covent Garden, Sagar offers some of the best-value vegetarian Indian food available in London.?The menu is based on dishes from south India and offers incredible value with selection plates and Thalis available at lunchtime for around ?5. Report: FBI forming new cyber intelligence research unit, focus on digital surveillance

According to a report filed by technology site CNET, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is forming a new cyber intelligence and research unit dubbed the Domestic Communications Assistance Center (DCAC). The briefing states that the DCAC's purpose will be "to invent technology that will let police more readily eavesdrop on Internet and wireless communications" (initially focusing on VoIP services, social networks, and wireless communication mediums) . Via a prepared statement, the FBI explained that the unit's modus operandi will be to "assist federal, state and local law enforcement with electronic surveillance capabilities." Congress has appropriated over $54 million for "lawful electronic surveillance" in fiscal year 2012; the DCAC has been earmarked just north of $8 million from that pie. Sony Xperia Play Gaming Smartphone Won't Be Getting Android OS 4.0 After All

Bad news for owners of Sony's gaming-oriented smartphone -- the company said today that the Xperia Play won't be getting the upgrade to the latest version of Android that the company promised earlier.

When Sony announced last year?which of its models would be upgraded to Android OS 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), the Xperia Play was on the list. Now, however, the company has released the following statement:

Ice Cream Sandwich demands more from the phone hardware than Gingerbread. Android 4.0 is a more powerful OS and thus, more resource intensive -- applications require more RAM, CPU power, and network bandwidth. From internal testing and feedback from the developer community on the beta ROM software release, we have seen a significant decline in user experience when running high performance games, as they are more demanding on the hardware. As gaming content is so integral to the core Xperia Play proposition, we cannot recommend an upgrade.

Sony is either prepping or has already released Android ICS upgrades for most recent models in its Xperia line. The only one of these to launch in the U.S. was the Xperia Play, however, which debuted last year from AT&T and Verizon.

The beta version of this upgrade for the Play that was released by Sony in the spring was almost an alpha and has significant limitations, including disabling Wi-Fi on the device.

MTV Networks to Launch New Country Music Magazine ...

Case Type: new business.

Case Interview Question #00545: Our client MTV Networks is a division of media conglomerate Viacom (NASDAQ: VIA, VIAB, short for ?Video & Audio Communications?) headquartered in New York City, New York, United States. The company oversees the operations of many music television channels and Internet brands, including the original MTV (Music Television) channel in the United States and the MTV Networks International.

As a major national music cable network in the U.S., MTV Networks recently is thinking about launching a new magazine dedicated to country music. You have been hired to help them with this initiative. Is this a good idea? What is the economics of launching this country music magazine?

Possible Answer:

Candidate: As our client is thinking about entering into country music magazine market, before we look at the economics of launching the magazine, I would like to first analyze the attractiveness of country music magazine market: its overall market size, growth, competitive landscape, consumer purchasing behavior, entry barrier and etc.

Then, if the market is attractive, I would like to look at our clients? capability to succeed in this market: where does it stand in line with the key successful factors in the magazine business? Could we create any synergy between the music cable network and the magazine business?

Then, I would use cost and benefit analysis to look at the profitability of launching the magazine business.

Finally, if all the above analysis is favorable to our client, I would look at different options of entering this business: acquire a current country magazine business, form a joint venture (JV), or start a new operation from scratch.

As we are specifically looking at the economics of launching the magazine, I would like to focus my analysis on the cost and benefit of launching this new magazine.

Interviewer: Great! Why don?t we do that?

Candidate: Let?s start with looking at the revenue of the country music magazine business. With my understanding of the business, there will be two main revenue streams: magazine subscription and advertisement. Am I right? (Note: if the candidate doesn?t know this, then prompt them for ?what you think are the two main revenue streams?? ? they should be able to develop them on the spot).

Interviewer: yes.

Candidate: Then I would like to ask whether we have any numbers on these revenues.

Interviewer: We might. But if we didn?t immediately have the number then how would you suggest our project team estimate the subscription revenue number?

Candidate: Well, we could do quick market size estimation. We could divide the market into subscribers and non-subscribers to our cable network. Let?s assume there are 100 million households in the U.S. How many subscribers do we have?

Interviewer: Well, we know that there are totally 25 million households subscribing to country music cable networks. 60% of them are subscribing to our client.

Candidate: Good. So 25 million * 60%, we have totally 15 million subscribers. Then there are 25 ? 15 = 10 million households who subscribe to other country music cable networks. Lastly, we have 75 million households who don?t subscribe to any country music cable networks.

My business common sense tells me that the conversion rate of our subscribers would be the highest as they listen to our cable network already which means that they like our collection of country music. We might be able to get some potential customers from the 75 million household who haven?t subscribed to the country music cable network yet, but my guess is that the conversion rate would be very low. Do we have any sense of these conversion rates?

Interviewer: I would like you to tell me how would you get these conversation rates?

Candidate: One way is to look at these numbers of a competitor. If these data are not available, we could do a market research using customer survey or interview.

Interviewer: Good. Let?s assume 80% of our 15 million cable network subscriber would subscribe to our country music magazine. 20% of the 10 million subscribers to other music cable network would subscribe to our country music magazine. To make our life easy, let?s forget the 75 million non-subscribers for now.

Candidate: Great, so we have totally: 15 * 80% + 10 * 20% = 14 million subscribers to our country music magazine. What is the revenue for an annual subscription?

Interviewer: One magazine costs $4 each and it will be published monthly.

Candidate: Then the subscription revenue will be: 14 * $4 * 12 months = $672 million. Now, let?s move onto the advertisement revenue. Do we have any data on this?

Interviewer: We know that advertisement revenue is about 50% of the subscription revenue.

Candidate: So advertisement revenue is 672 * 50% = $336 million. Thus total revenue is 672 + 336 = $1,008 million. Now let?s move onto the cost side. As it is magazine business, I would assume that the major cost items would be: labor, printing, distribution, marketing & sales. Do we have any data on this?

Interviewer: Well, our competitor has a 12% margin in the magazine business.

Candidate: Good. I would assume that our competitor enjoys some scale effect and operation efficiency while moving along the experience curve and thus has a higher margin than our client.

Then, our client?s margin would be 10%. With revenue of $1,008 million, the annual profit from magazine business is around $100 million. It looks pretty good so far. Let?s see how significant this means to our client?s business. How much profit our client is having right now?

Interviewer: About $500 million.

Candidate: So the magazine business will bring 20% more profit, which is pretty good. From the pure number side, the economics looks very good. However, I would like to look more at the qualitative side. As I laid out my structure at the very beginning of the case, I would like to further investigate those areas, especially competitors? possible response and customers? feedback and our client?s resources to see whether our client is able to get the $100 million profit for the proposed country music magazine business.

Interviewer: Very good! We will look at these later. Let?s just stop here for now.

Notes to Interviewer:

It is not a very complicated case about entering the new market. It would be nice if the interviewee could lay out the structure for entering the new market at the beginning of the case. However, as the interviewer is asking for economics, the focus of the case should be on benefit and cost analysis.

The interviewer is also testing the interviewees? ability to carry out a market size estimation and to hold a high level strategy discussion as well. As the interviewer, you should not be afraid to diverge from the path above. Use your own industry knowledge and experiences to push the candidate to brainstorm more. However, do use the math questions to always bring the candidate back to the case, and let them determine the final market size for the client.

The Humane Society of the United States is urging the state Senate to quickly pass a bill that would ban the private possession of dangerous exotic animals ? including lions, tigers, bears, wolves, coyotes, bobcats, leopards, cougars, cheetahs, jaguars and primates.?

House Bill 1398, sponsored by Rep. Edward Staback, D-Lackawanna/Wayne, is in the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Under current Pennsylvania law, it is legal to keep dangerous wild animals as pets provided the person purchases a permit from the Pennsylvania Game Commission to keep that animal. There is no requirement that the permit holder notify neighbors, local law enforcement or schools that the animal is being kept. There is very little regulatory oversight, according to the Humane Society.

The Humane Society recently released the results of an undercover investigation into GW Exotic Animal Park in Wynnewood, Okla., which revealed unwarranted breeding, tiger deaths and dangerous incidents involving paying customers and their children. The investigator witnessed or heard reports about numerous dangerous public interactions at the roadside zoo ? some with a nearly full-grown tiger ? including at least six cases where visitors were bitten or scratched.

The facility regularly takes tigers across state lines to shopping malls and other venues for photo opportunities with the public, according to the investigation. In 2008, GW Exotics shipped two 11-week-old tiger cubs to the Genesis Wildlife

Center in NayAug Park in Scranton ? a year before Genesis closed down.

?The tigers from GW Exotics may now be living in a Pennsylvania backyard,? said Sarah Speed, Pennsylvania state director for the Humane Society. ?We should not wait until another tragedy occurs before adopting strict standards in the law. Pennsylvania?s lawmakers should act swiftly to pass this bill to protect residents and prevent animals from suffering in backyards and basements.?

In 2009 Kelly Ann Waltz was attacked and killed by her pet bear in Ross Township, Monroe County. Waltz also held a permit allowing her to keep a Bengal tiger and an African lion. Waltz was cleaning the bear?s 15-foot by 15-foot steel and concrete enclosure when she was attacked. A neighbor shot the bear after the attack.

Ohio lawmakers this week are considering legislation banning private citizens from acquiring dangerous wild animals as pets.

Peter Boettke has an excellent commentary over at Coordination Problem, ?Is This How the Myth of the Laissez Faire Herbert Hoover Was Invented??. He concludes, ?Herbert Hoover was as much of a laissez faire president as Barack Obama has been or the leaders in Europe have been. From a free market perspective, the steps taken since 2007 have turned a market correction into an economy wide crisis and then a global crisis. Those steps were anything but ?do nothing,? and they were taken first by a Republican President and then pursued further by a Democratic President. We have never given ?nothing? a chance. But mythologies need to be created in order to tell neat historical tales. Laissez faire Hoover is replaced by activist FDR and the nation is saved.?

Pierre Lemieux in Somebody in Charge: A Solution to Recessions? provides a detailed and enlightening discussion of how the issues Peter raises in his post played out in the recent crisis. Policy failure, not market failure generated the malinvestments and crisis. The rush to do something slowed recovery.

?The roots of the recent financial crisis, according to economist Pierre Lemieux, lay not in greed and self-interest running amuck in unhampered markets, but in the policy and regulatory structure that created and enabled excessive leverage and risk taking. If Lemieux?s latest book were widely read, more people would believe that financial regulators and central banks are not needed to avoid financial crises and economic recessions.

And the conclusion:

?Lemieux?s conclusion that ?The causes and legacy of the economic crisis of 2007-2009 reveal a deeper underlying crisis, which is a crisis of authority? (p. 162). If this book was widely read and widely used in classrooms, it could be very useful in awaking more of the public that we do not need somebody in charge. What we need is ?Wicksteed?s car of collectivism? to ?be stored on a sidetrack? (p. 163).?
