The use of fixed service satellite Technology - Cash-Bandit.com

A fixed service satellite (FSS) is a type of satellite used for services like telephone calls, and television signals for broadcasting. FSS generally has a low power output and larger dish-style antennas are needed for reception. FSS satellites have less power than direct broadcasting satellites (DBS).FSS satellites have also been used for Direct-To-Home (DTH) satellite television channels in North America since the late 1970s. This function has been mostly displaced by DBS television systems beginning in 1994 when DirecTV stared the first DBS television system. FSS satellites in North America are also employed to relay channels of cable TV networks from their originating studios to local cable headends and to the operations centers of DBS services to be re-broadcast over their DBS systems.

FSS satellites were the first geosynchronous communications satellites launched in space. Systems used to receive television channels and other feeds from FSS satellites are usually termed as Television Receive Only or TVRO systems, as well as big-dish systems. This is due to a much larger dish size in comparison to systems for DBS satellite reception.

The Dish Network satellite TV service also depends on FSS satellite technology in the Ku band to give the needed extra ability to manage local channels needed by FCC must-carry rules and make room for high definition TV resolution. The old Super Dish system that network stopped manufacture of years ago, receives circularly-polarized DBS 12.7?GHz from both 110-degree or the Echostar 8 and 10 satellites and 119-degree or the Echostar 7 satellite) orbital locations as well as linearly-polarized FSS 11.7?GHz from either the 121-degree or Echostar 9 or 105-degree orbital locations reliant on consumer selection. Those FSS satellites are not used for Dish Network home subscribers any more, and are now used completely for commercial or corporate services. It has an oval LNB called a DP DBS/FSS Dual Band. This LNB will receive both the 119-degree and 118.7-degree satellites.

While the original Dish Network satellites use circular polarity at 12.7?GHz, the newer Intelsat 13/Echostar 9 satellite at 121-degrees uses the older FSS technology to broadcast commercial and corporate services. As a result, recent DiSH Network receivers are planned to receive both circular and linearly-polarized signals at two different intermediary frequencies from up to five different orbital locations.

The SuperDish had three low-noise block downconverters to hold the three satellites and two different technologies. SuperDish came in two configurations: SuperDiSH 121 was for international programming but is presently employed wholly for commercial and corporate services and SuperDiSH 105 which is presently used specifically for commercial and corporate services. These two configurations were used for high definition and for customers in areas whose local channels are only available on the 105-degree satellite. As with other FSS technologies these signals have much lower power and as a result the SuperDISH is a very large and unbalanced attachment. However, since the SuperDISH is under 1-meter in width it cannot be disqualified by homeowners? associations.

Comcast exempts its new streaming video service from bandwidth ...

By Stephen C. Webster
Wednesday, March 28, 2012 11:26 EDT

?

U.S. cable network operator Comcast said this week that its new Xfinity online streaming video service would be exempt from the bandwidth caps it imposes on its own Internet subscribers, raising alarms that it could be committing a serious violation of Internet neutrality principles.

The company launched their Xfinity streaming video service Wednesday on Xbox Live, marking the start of a new partnership for Internet video delivery that binds gaming and cable television service together for the first time.

But it?s not all roses: first, Comcast Internet subscribers must also subscribe to Xbox Live and the new Xfinity service, and have another cable box in the house tied into Xfinity as well. Once those requirements are met, Comcast?s full library of new streaming videos are available at the push of a button, delivered over the Internet to the users? gaming console.

The only potential roadblock, Comcast?s 250 gigabyte bandwidth cap, is also not a concern, the company said this week. Xfinity subscribers on Xbox will be exempt from the cap when using the service, but other competing Internet video applications will not enjoy that luxury.

More than 50 percent of Americans? Internet connections have become bandwidth-limited in recent years.

Microsoft is quite pleased about the partnership: the company has been emphasizing the integration of video applications on Xbox Live for years now, and just this week they announced that more than 50 percent of their traffic is going to ?entertainment? services, instead of just online game playing.

Xfinity and its chief rival, popular online video sharing service Netflix, are a big part of that, along with Hulu Plus, ESPN and Microsoft?s own video rental service Zune Marketplace. But Comcast?s move gives them a clear leg-up on the competition, especially for users who frequently watch bandwidth-heavy media like high definition movies and television shows.

By exempting its own service from the company?s bandwidth caps, Comcast places its content rivals at a disadvantage that, on its face, appears to violate the principle of Internet neutrality, which the Federal Communications Commission mandated for the public Internet in rules issued two years ago. Internet neutrality stipulates that all web traffic must be treated equally, which would seemingly prevent big corporations from prioritizing their traffic over small businesses, activist groups and others.

Comcast is getting around those rules by delivering Xfinity over a ?private IP network,? it explained in a customer FAQ published this week. By drawing a distinction between ?the public Internet? and its own high bandwidth ?private? network, Comcast has proved its critics were right to suggest that weakened neutrality rules would lead to the creation of ?super tiers,? where more bandwidth would be available to the owners, operators and, potentially, anyone who can pay enough.

Comcast and Netflix did not respond to requests for comment on this story.

Internet freedom activists have long warned that the ?cableization? of the Internet was coming, and if Comcast were to open up its own ?private IP network? to other major content providers ? for a fee, of course ? it would represent the creation of a super-tiered Internet of sorts, where moneyed players essentially run the show, forsaking the public Internet for the private Internet and hauling millions of users along with them into a new environment with entirely different rules.

It?s also not the first time Comcast has used its bandwidth resources to hurt a competitor and enrich itself: in 2010, Netflix partner Level 3 was forced into paying a reoccurring fee to ?transmit Internet online movies and other content to Comcast?s customers who request such content.? They agreed under protest, saying their highest priority was averting service interruptions, which Comcast threatened if Level 3 did not pay up.

Critics compared the move to extortion and blackmail, but it was perfectly legal because no regulations at the time had addressed network operators charging tolls or blocking content. Now that those rules are solidified and ?public Internet? traffic must be treated equally, network owners have been eyeing ways to further monetize their bandwidth resources.

Xfinity, it would seem, is just the beginning.

Unsecured Debt Consolidation Can Save You From bankruptcy ...

The last resort to any person would be bankruptcy. There is another way out, when the question of debt issue arises then unsecured debt consolidation loans are much less damaging than bankruptcy. The thing that you need to keep in mind is that you fully understand what it is and what the alternative debt consolidation options available are. As the name implies unsecured debt consolidation loans are not backed by any security. As there is no security attached to the loan, except for you such loans are a risky affair to the bank. The banks charge a higher rate of interest for such loans. These loans are difficult to get but I think they are a better option than bankruptcy. As the interest rates are high you should first calculate the total amount of interest you would be paying over the period, the day you take the loan and make the complete repayment, if you find the interest amount too high then look for another option.

Intel Core i7-3820

When you?re building your own computer, the first thing to decide is: How much of an enthusiast do you want to be? If you have the desire and the money, you can go for an all-out bleeding-edge system; if not, there are usually more reasonable options. Well, the Intel Core i7-3820 CPU is certainly reasonable by the standards of the company?s Sandy Bridge?Extreme line: Priced at $294 list, it?s noticeably less expensive than either the top-tier Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition ($999 list) or the nipping-at-its-heels Core i7-3930K ($583 list). With the Core i7-3820 you?ll still get a fine chip for your money, but you?ll have to sacrifice the eye-popping performance and features of the pricier chips to get it. If you?re okay with that, you?ll be okay with this CPU.

The Core i7-3820?s differences are apparent just from its specs. In several ways it is much the same as its bigger brothers: It?s based on the same 32nm production process, it has the same 130-watt TDP, and it will require you to also have an X79 Express motherboard (with the LGA2011 socket), a discrete video card (there?s no integrated graphics system on the chip), and a separate CPU cooler (Intel doesn?t bundle one with any CPU in this line). But there the similarities end. The Core i7-3820 has only four processing cores rather than six and thus can handle only eight threads rather than 12. (Though, of course, you?ll most readily notice that deficit if you work regularly with highly threaded applications.) The Core i7-3820 has less cache, too (10MB, versus 12MB for the Core i7-3930K and 15MB for the Core i7-3960X), but it compensates with a clock speed of 3.6GHz that puts it at the front of the Sandy Bridge?Extreme line by that particular metric (the Core i7-3930K?s is 3.2GHz, the Core i7-3960X?s is 3.3GHz). The Core i7-3820?s clocks can rise up to 3.9GHz when Turbo Boost is active; that?s the same rate as the Core i7-3960X (and higher than the Core i7-3930K?s 3.8GHz).

Another variation from the other designs is what hurts the Core i7-3820?s street cred more. Whereas the other two chips have fully unlocked Turbo mode multipliers, this chip?s is only partially unlocked, which means it can be increased by a maximum of four speed bins over the stock clock rate?thus topping out at 4.3GHz. Because Sandy Bridge?Extreme chips provide additional flexibility in terms of adjusting the base clock (with 125MHz, 166MHz, and 250MHz straps), you can push the chip?s overall clock speed further than that. But still, if overclocking is your thing, expect that roadblock to be a bit frustrating.

All this is not to say, however, that you don?t get good performance with the Core i7-3820?you do. For example, when installed in a test system loaded with an Asus P9X79 Deluxe motherboard, it completed our Adobe Photoshop CS5 test in 2 minutes 55 seconds, just 2 seconds behind the Core i7-3930K and 7 seconds behind the Core i7-3960X. But you get (expectedly) bigger gaps elsewhere: In CineBench R11.5, the Core i7-3820 scored 7.07 with multiple cores activated, compared with 10.17 for the Core i7-3930K and 10.48 for the Core i7-3960X. On the Futuremark 3DMark 11 physics test, the Core i7-3820 dropped just below our threshold for smooth pliability, with a score of 8,679 and 27.6 frames per second (or fps) compared with 10,958 and 34.78fps for the Core i7-3930K and 11,509 and 36.54fps for the Core i7-3960X.

There are a couple of additional characteristics worth mentioning about the Core i7-3820?s performance. First, it easily beats out not only other high-end chips from AMD like the FX-8150 and the Phenom II X6 1100T, but in many cases the most powerful model from Intel?s previous generations, the Core i7-990X?a nice accomplishment that shows how quickly ?fast? filters downward. The Core i7-3820?s gains are considerably less significant against the regular Sandy Bridge?based Core i7-2600K, and its follow-up the Core i7-2700K, both of which are only slightly more expensive. But compared with the Core i7-3830K, you won?t see much of a difference in single-threaded applications: Both chips scored the same (1.53) in the CineBench R11.5 single-core test, showing where you can save money if you don?t heavily depend on highly threaded programs.

A nice dip also occurs in power usage: As measured with an Extech Datalogger, the Core i7-3820 pulled 121 watts while idle and 197.3 watts under full load, whereas the Core i7-3930K had a draw of 122.5 watts at idle and 233.7 watts at full load. This may not make a huge difference, but depending on your usage pattern could add up over the life of the chip.

We still think that if you?re going to go all out on a Sandy Bridge?Extreme CPU, the best choice is the Editors? Choice Intel Core i7-3930K: It may cost nearly $600, but it?s a terrific performer that only slightly lags behind the Core i7-3960X. But if you can?t afford that, and if you don?t already have a Core i7-2600K? or Core i7-2700K?based system that will for all intents and purposes be just as good, the Intel Core i7-3820 is still a compelling compromise. You?ll just need to be sure you can live without the bells and whistles the more expensive chips offer.

The face of sports for the 21st century?

15 hrs.

The Major League Gaming Pro Circuit Winter Championships start Friday and run throughout the weekend. Taking place in Columbus, Ohio, the world's finest "StarCraft 2," "Halo: Reach," "Mortal Kombat," "Soulcalibur V" and "King of Fighter XIII" players have all converged to see who is the best professional gamer in their respective circles.

To reach this point, every player was a victor in various semi-final contests. In the case of the "StarCraft 2" players, all the participants were chosen as the result of the Winter Arena Feb. 24-26 at Major League Gaming's headquarters in New York City. MSNBC was on hand to view the event and to speak with those involved.

Advocates of the e-sports movement have long argued that it's on the same level as traditional sports, comparable to baseball, football and the rest. While many will concede that it's somewhat silly to compare someone who excels on the basketball court with someone who excels at "Street Fighter," becoming a serious competitor requires much hard work and dedication. And thus an appropriate amount of respect.

The challenges that athletes on both sides face are actually quite similar, including their parents. "It was a constant concern with mine, when I first became involved," said Andrew Dudynsky, a former professional "Halo" player, who has since retired and is currently pursing various career paths, all still related to e-sports, including commentating (which he'll be handing for "Reach" this weekend's event) .

Dudynsky's mother gave him a choice, he said: either continue professional gaming and go to community college, or stop playing entirely to attend a major school. He was confident that he'd be able to dedicate himself to both serious gaming and a major university, and eventually did so. His average GPA was 3.97.

One curious consistent trait among all the participants?interviewed is how every single one proudly stressed the high marks they were able to achieve in school while competing. An understandable point of pride, given all the hard work and discipline, even when one is "simply playing a game."

Like many professions, there's little glory at first. Dudynsky described all the time and money he spent while trying to establish himself early on. It's especially difficult to maintain a personal life, like friends and girlfriends, because of the grueling schedule.

During the height of his pro gaming career, he said he would spend every waking moment that wasn't dedicated to studies to playing. Or traveling to whatever part of the world a competition was taking place. Often he'd take a red eye back, to arrive just in time for his first class in the morning. But his perseverance paid off.?

While he didn't say specifically how much money he made during his heyday, he said, with confidence in his voice, that it was a good amount, enough to pay for college at the very least.

These days, Dudynsky is no longer an active competitor, but instead coaches for the current crop of players. He also explained how, in addition to the hefty cash prizes that contests can provide, a good deal of income stems from sponsorships. "Professional gaming is still young enough in which advertising for someone still matters."

He elaborated: ?If a winning gamer is seen wearing the logo of a particular kind of video card or keyboard and mouse, that company will see an immediate return. But if Tiger Woods is seen with a particular kind of golf club, the effect is not nearly as strong.?

Another form of income?is live-streams, he said. Almost all are found on Twitch.tv, a relatively recent offshoot of Justin.tv. Not only does it broadcast all of Major League Gaming's programming, but it's where anyone who is anyone in the scene has a presence. Not only do pro gamers share strategies and commentary, but it helps to get them better-known, which enhances the brands they represent even further.

Justin Kan, co-founder of Justin.tv, explains: "We consider it like ESPN for video games, except for having ESPN 1, 2, and Classic, we have Twitch.tv 1, 2, 3, 4, all the way to 700." Programming ranges from content provided by the sponsors themselves, to just candid, fly-on-the-wall looks at the lives of pro gamers, many of whom live and train together under one roof.

Some of these personalities bring in about "$5,000 to $7,000 a month, from just streaming their game playing," Kan said. "Some earn high five figures ? I think we might have one or two who are bringing in six figures on the site,"?just from people watching them play "StarCraft" or "Halo." Kan believes such numbers are encouraging the business.

And it's one that is clearly growing; Kan knew such numbers were possible. He simply didn't anticipate that they would be achieved just six months into Twitch.tv's existence.

But despite the healthy profit margins, it will take much more for many to take e-sports seriously.

"People often ask how it's going to become mainstream next to traditional sports," said Sundance DiGiovanni, CEO of Major League Gaming.?

"The real answer to that is how we define sports, which changes with the times. The 8-year-olds of today, when they grow up, what is going to be sports to them? Just as people had concerns with mixed martial arts, even extreme sports, it's not up to the old guard. It's up to the next generation to define what is entertainment to them."

The Pro Circuit Winter Championships can be viewed all weekend via Twitch.tv, which is being streamed for free in standard definition. For high-definition streams, simply head to Major League Gaming.

Documents show NYPD infiltrated liberal groups

(AP) ? Undercover NYPD officers attended meetings of liberal political organizations and kept intelligence files on activists who planned protests around the country, according to interviews and documents that show how police have used counterterrorism tactics to monitor even lawful activities.

The infiltration echoes the tactics the NYPD used in the run-up to New York's 2004 Republican National Convention, when police monitored church groups, anti-war organizations and environmental advocates nationwide. That effort was revealed by The New York Times in 2007 and in an ongoing federal civil rights lawsuit over how the NYPD treated convention protesters.

Police said the pre-convention spying was necessary to prepare for the huge, raucous crowds that were headed to the city. But documents obtained by The Associated Press show that the police department's intelligence unit continued to keep close watch on political groups in 2008, long after the convention had passed.

In April 2008, an undercover NYPD officer traveled to New Orleans to attend the People's Summit, a gathering of liberal groups organized around their shared opposition to U.S. economic policy and the effect of trade agreements between the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

When the undercover effort was summarized for supervisors, it identified groups opposed to U.S. immigration policy, labor laws and racial profiling. Two activists ? Jordan Flaherty, a journalist, and Marisa Franco, a labor organizer for housekeepers and nannies ? were mentioned by name in one of the police intelligence reports obtained by the AP.

"One workshop was led by Jordan Flaherty, former member of the International Solidarity Movement Chapter in New York City," officers wrote in an April 25, 2008, memo to David Cohen, the NYPD's top intelligence officer. "Mr. Flaherty is an editor and journalist of the Left Turn Magazine and was one of the main organizers of the conference. Mr. Flaherty held a discussion calling for the increase of the divestment campaign of Israel and mentioned two events related to Palestine."

The document is available here: http://apne.ws/GGCBuX .

The document provides the latest example of how, in the name of fighting terrorism, law enforcement agencies around the country have scrutinized groups that legally oppose government policies. The FBI, for instance, has collected information on anti-war demonstrators. The Maryland state police infiltrated meetings of anti-death penalty groups. Missouri counterterrorism analysts suggested that support for Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, might indicate support for violent militias ? an assertion for which state officials later apologized. And Texas officials urged authorities to monitor lobbying efforts by pro Muslim-groups.

Police have good reason to want to know what to expect when protesters take to the streets. Many big cities, such as Seattle in 1999, Cincinnati in 2001 and Toledo in 2005, have seen protests turned into violent, destructive riots. Intelligence from undercover officers gives police an idea of what to expect and lets them plan accordingly.

"There was no political surveillance," Cohen testified in the ongoing lawsuit over NYPD's handling of protesters at the Republican convention. "This was a program designed to determine in advance the likelihood of unlawful activity or acts of violence."

The result of those efforts, however, was that people and organizations can be cataloged in police files for discussing political topics or advocating even legal protests, not violence or criminal activity.

By contrast, at the height of the Occupy Wall Street protests and in related protests in other cities, officials at the U.S. Homeland Security Department repeatedly urged authorities not to produce intelligence reports based simply on protest activities.

"Occupy Wall Street-type protesters mostly are engaged in constitutionally protected activity," department officials wrote in documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by the website Gawker. "We maintain our longstanding position that DHS should not report on activities when the basis for reporting is political speech."

At the NYPD, the monitoring was carried out by the Intelligence Division, a squad that operates with nearly no outside oversight and is so secretive that police said even its organizational chart is too sensitive to publish. The division has been the subject of a series of Associated Press articles that illustrated how the NYPD monitored Muslim neighborhoods, catalogued people who prayed at mosques and eavesdropped on sermons.

The AP left phone messages with Cohen and two NYPD press officers last week seeking comment about the undercover operation in New Orleans. They did not return the calls.

The NYPD has defended its efforts, saying the threat of terrorism means officers cannot wait to open an investigation until a crime is committed. Under rules governing NYPD investigations, officers are allowed to go anywhere the public can go and can prepare reports for "operational planning."

Though the NYPD's infiltration of political groups before the 2004 convention generated some controversy and has become an element in a lawsuit over the arrest, fingerprinting and detention of protesters, the surveillance itself has not been challenged in court.

Flaherty, who also writes for The Huffington Post, said he was not an organizer of the summit, as police wrote in the NYPD report. He said the event described by police actually was a film festival in New Orleans that same week, suggesting that the undercover officer's duties were more widespread than described in the report.

Flaherty said he recalls introducing a film about Palestinians but spoke only briefly and does not understand why that landed him a reference in police files.

"The only threat was the threat of ideas," he said. "I think this idea of secret police following you around is terrifying. It really has an effect of spreading fear and squashing dissent."

Before the terrorist attacks of September 2001, infiltrating political groups was one of the most tightly controlled powers the NYPD could use. Such investigations were restricted by a longstanding court order in a lawsuit over the NYPD's spying on protest groups in the 1960s.

After the attacks, Cohen told a federal judge that, to keep the city safe, police must be allowed to open investigations before there's evidence of a crime. A federal judge agreed and relaxed the rules.

Since then, police have monitored not only suspected terrorists but also entire Muslim neighborhoods, mosques, restaurants and law-abiding protesters.

Keeping tabs on planned demonstrations is a key function of Cohen's division. Investigators with his Cyber Intelligence Unit monitor websites of activist groups, and undercover officers put themselves on email distribution lists for upcoming events. Plainclothes officers collect fliers on public demonstrations. Officers and informants infiltrate the groups and attend rallies, parades and marches.

Intelligence analysts take all this information and distill it into summaries for Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly's daily briefing, documents show.

The April 2008 memo offers an unusually candid view of how political monitoring fit into the NYPD's larger, post-9/11 intelligence mission. As the AP has reported previously, Cohen's unit has transformed the NYPD into one of the most aggressive domestic intelligence agencies in the United States, one that infiltrated Muslim student groups, monitored their websites and used informants as listening posts inside mosques.

Along with the political monitoring, the document describes plans to use informants to monitor mosques for conversations about the imminent verdict in the trial of three NYPD officers charged in the 2006 shooting death of Sean Bell, an unarmed man who died in a hail of gunfire. Police were worried about how the black community, particularly the New Black Panther Party, would respond to the verdict, according to this and other documents obtained by the AP.

The document also contained details of a whitewater rafting trip that an undercover officer attended with Muslim students from City College New York.

"The group prayed at least four times a day, and much of the conversation was spent discussing Islam and was religious in nature," the report reads.

Eugene Puryear, 26, an activist who attended the New Orleans summit, said he was not surprised to learn that police were monitoring it. He said it was entirely peaceful, a way to connect community organizers around the issues of racism and the rights of the poor. But he described it as a challenge to corporate power and said the NYPD probably felt threatened by it.

"From their perspective, they need to spy on peaceful groups so they're not effective at putting out their peaceful message," he said. "They are threatened by anything challenging the status quo."

What if trees could be used as batteries?

What if trees could be used as batteries?

Yes, our bark-skinned friends are nice and beautiful and we shouldn't mess with them too much. But here's the thing: we already chop them down for paper, so why not use their spare woody meat for batteries too? Like previous attempts at organic energy storage, it all hinges on mimicking photosynthesis. Up to the a third of the biomass of a tree is a pulpy substance called lignin, which is a by-product from paper production and which contains electro-chemically active molecules called quinones. With a bit of processing, Professor Olle Inganäs at Linköping University in Sweden reckons he can turn lignin into a thin film that can be used as cathode in a battery, and he believes it's efficient enough to start industrial-style development of the technology. "Nature solved the problem long ago", he says, and "[Lignin is] a source that never ends". Meanwhile, if you imagine Inganäs as having a long white beard and cloak, then, er, snap.

Kurd militants threaten Turkey if it enters Syria

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish Kurd militants threatened on Thursday to turn all Kurdish populated areas into a "war zone" if Turkish troops entered Syria, a sign the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which has allies in Syria may be taking sides in the conflict there.

A renewed alliance between Damascus and the PKK would anger Turkey and could prompt it to take an even stronger line against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over his brutal repression of anti-government protesters.

PKK field commander Murat Karayilan said Turkey was preparing the ground for an intervention in Syria.

"The Turkish state is planning an intervention against our people," the Europe-based Firat news agency, close to the militants, quoted him as saying.

"Let me state clearly, if the Turkish state intervenes against our people in western Kurdistan, all of Kurdistan will turn into a war zone," he said.

Western Kurdistan is the term Kurdish nationalists use to describe Kurdish areas of northeast Syria, while by Kurdistan they mean the Kurdish areas of Turkey, Iraq, Syria and Iran.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said last week that setting up a "safe zone" or a "buffer zone" along the border with Syria to protect civilians from Assad's forces was among the options being considered should the stream of refugees turn into a flood.

Setting up such a zone would involve troops entering Syria to secure territory. Turkey has turned sharply against its former friend Assad and has taken a lead in trying to forge international agreement on the need for stronger action on Syria.

While Syrian government forces are clashing daily with insurgents demanding the downfall of Assad, Syrian Kurdish areas have remained relatively calm, despite many Kurds' long-standing opposition to the government.

Some Syrian Kurdish groups opposed to Assad have formed their own umbrella group after complaining of being sidelined by the main opposition Syrian National Council (SNC), which they say is dominated by Arab nationalists.

But the comparative calm in Syria's Kurdish northeast may also be related to what some Kurdish analysts say is the growing influence of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), a Syrian Kurdish group allied to the PKK which has kept away from the opposition.

TURKEY WARNS SYRIA ON PKK

The PKK, set up in 1984 to fight for Kurdish home rule in southeast Turkey, is commanded from bases in the remote mountains of northern Iraq, but was once backed by Syria.

Though Turkey has the second biggest army in NATO, it has failed to quash the PKK in 27 years of bitter fighting. More than 40,000 militants, soldiers and civilians have been killed in the conflict. Turkey, the United States and the European Union all list the PKK as a terrorist organization.

Turkish officials say they are watching closely for signs Syria may renew its support for the PKK, which it dropped in late 1998 after Turkish tanks massed on the Syrian border. Damascus was forced to deport PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan who was later seized by Turkish special forces in Kenya.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has repeatedly said Syria "would not dare" make such a mistake again.

Kurds make up at least 10 percent of Syria's population. Like the majority of Syrians, they are Sunni Muslims, but have struggled to assert their ethnic identity under 40 years of Arab nationalist Ba'ath Party rule.

The Assad regime had denied some stateless Kurds Syrian nationality documents but it has made concessions since the start of the uprising to ease unrest in Kurdish areas.

Some Arabs are concerned that the Kurds, mostly based in northeast Syria on the borders with Turkey and Iraq, secretly seek a separate state that includes cross border territories.

Syrian Kurd opposition groups deny wanting a separate state, but say they want autonomy similar to that of the Iraqi Kurds.
