Sally Ride, Pioneer

Almost 30 years ago, Sally Ride broke the NASA gender barrier and became America's first female astronaut. While aboard the Challenger shuttle Ride used a robotic arm she helped design, to deploy and receive a satellite. She died Monday of pancreatic cancer, at age 61.

FLORA LICHTMAN, BYLINE: Sally Ride was nearing the end of her Ph.D. program in physics when she saw an ad in the Stanford student newspaper looking for new astronauts. That ad led to her career at NASA and her page in the history books. She was an educator, physicist and nationally ranked tennis player, but was chosen to be an astronaut for her technical expertise and cool head. Dr. Ride was a pioneer as both America's first female astronaut and its youngest to fly into space. She died Monday after a 17-month struggle with pancreatic cancer. In 2003, Dr. Ride appeared on SCIENCE FRIDAY and with amazing foresight, she stressed the importance of looking outside NASA for spaceflight research and design.

DR. SALLY RIDE: It's essential to harness the imaginations of the people out there who've been thinking about this. You know, they're - NASA doesn't have, you know, the sole ownership of creative ideas for getting to space. And, you know, a lot of the thinking has been going on for years and years and years, and sometimes you get in a rut with your thinking and sometimes you don't - you lose your creativity, you lose your imagination. And it's essential to have, you know, smart, creative, imaginative people from whatever walk of life and whatever age be able to have some input into the process and be able to have their ideas heard.

LICHTMAN: Sally Ride also spoke to why we must continue to explore space.

RIDE: It is innate in who we are to push back frontiers, to explore, to have a real desire to understand, to try to learn more about ourselves and our environment, in this case, our solar system, our universe. People have been exploring for centuries and centuries and centuries, and they'll still be exploring centuries from now. You know, this is what we do.

LICHTMAN: Sally Ride, dead at the age of 61.

IRA FLATOW, HOST:

Thank you, Flora.

LICHTMAN: Thank you.

FLATOW: Thanks for joining us today. That's about all the time we have for today.

Fred Willard Explains Arrest, Adult Movie Theater Adventure

At least Fred Willard is able to laugh at himself.

Appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon yesterday, a week after being arrested for allegedly having his pants down inside an adult movie theater in Los Angeles, the veteran comedian kicked off his interview with one question for the host:

"What do you want to talk about first?"

Fred Willard Image

From there, the actor made a few more jokes (“It’s the last time I’m gonna listen to my wife when she says, ‘Why don’t you go out and see a movie?’”) before admitting he did stop by an "exotic" looking theater and it felt like "a trip down Alice in Wonderland and down the rabbit hole," where he was the "only awake and sober and conscious” person in the theater.

But seriously, folks.

“It’s very embarrassing,” Willard said. “It’s embarrassing as hell! But let me say this: nothing happened. I did nothing wrong, everything’s being sorted out as we speak.”

The actor has been fired from his gig at PBS, but is unlikely to face prosecution

“I have great respect for the authorities,” Willard added. “I mean, when we need a policeman, God bless ‘em, they’re there. But, if you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time, everything seems suspicious.

“But it’s very embarrassing. Very painful. And I’m trying to laugh it off. But my summary of the evening is that it’s an interesting theater, boring movie, and a great place to take a nap.”

Few think sluggish US economy will strengthen soon

(AP) ? A U.S. economy that plodded along in the first three months of the year likely grew even less in the April-June quarter. And most economists no longer think growth will strengthen much in the second half of 2012.

Weaker hiring, nervous consumers, sluggish manufacturing and the overhang of Europe's debt crisis might be pointing toward everyone's big fear: another recession.

Against that background, the government on Friday will issue its first of three estimates of how much the U.S. economy expanded last quarter. The consensus forecast is that growth slowed to an annual rate of 1.5 percent, according to a survey of economists by data firm FactSet. The Commerce Department will issue the estimate at 8:30 a.m. EDT.

A quarterly growth rate of 1.5 percent would be the weakest in a year. It would follow a meager 1.9 percent rate in the first three months of 2012.

Much more growth would be needed to fuel stronger hiring. Economists generally say even 2 percent annual growth would add only about 90,000 jobs a month. That's too few to drive down the unemployment rate, which is stuck at 8.2 percent.

The U.S. economy has never been so sluggish this long into a recovery. The Great Recession officially ended in June 2009.

Until a few weeks ago, many economists had been predicting that growth would accelerate in the final six months of the year. They pointed to gains in manufacturing, home and auto sales and lower gas prices.

But threats to the U.S. economy have left consumers ? who account for about 70 percent of the economy ? too anxious to spend freely. Jobs are tight. Pay isn't keeping up with inflation. Retail sales fell in June for a third straight month. Manufacturing has weakened in most areas of the country.

Fear is also growing that the economy will fall off a "fiscal cliff" at year's end. That's when tax increases and deep spending cuts will take effect unless Congress reaches a budget agreement.

All that is making companies reluctant to expand and hire much.

From April through June, U.S. job growth slowed to 75,000 a month, down from a healthy 226,000 average in the first three months of the year.

"The European situation has been getting worse and is dragging down the global economy," said Sung Won Sohn, an economics professor at California State University. "And we have got the fiscal cliff to worry about in the United States."

Six of the 17 countries that use the euro currency are in recession. Growth has also weakened in powerhouse emerging markets in China, India and Brazil. With these economies slowing, so is their demand for U.S. exports.

Sohn estimates the likelihood of a U.S. recession within the next 12 months at 30 percent to 35 percent. That's up from his estimate of 20 percent six months ago.

Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS Global Insight, puts the chance of a recession at 25 percent. He expects growth to increase slightly to an annual rate above 2 percent in the second half of this year.

Other economists are gloomier. They think growth will muddle along below 2 percent through 2012.

Many economists think consumers pulled back sharply on spending last quarter. Analysts at JPMorgan estimate that consumer spending grew at a scant 1 percent annual pace in the April-June period, down from a 2.5 percent annual increase in the first quarter.

"Businesses and consumers are quite worried, so they're holding back," Behravesh said. "For consumers, the worry is the jobs markets. Businesses are worried about Europe. And China is looking weaker than most of us would have thought even a few months ago."

Behravesh said even companies that think Congress will manage to reach a budget deal by year's end are too uncertain about possible tax changes to step up hiring.

"That is making them very cautious about investment decisions," he said.

In delivering the Federal Reserve's midyear economic report to Congress last week, Chairman Ben Bernanke sketched a bleak picture. And he warned that unless lawmakers strike a deal, the tax increases and deep spending cuts that will take effect Jan. 1 could trigger another U.S. recession.

Bernanke has said the Fed is prepared to take further action if unemployment stays high. He hasn't specified what steps it might take or whether any action is imminent.

The lackluster economy is also raising pressure on President Barack Obama in his re-election fight with Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

But few think the Fed, the White House or Congress can or will do anything soon that might rejuvenate the economy quickly. Many lawmakers, for example, refuse to increase federal spending in light of historically large budget deficits.

"There is nothing out there to light a fire under the economy," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors.

Why is likelihood of prostate cancer diagnosis declining? ? THE ...

Posted on by Sitemaster

In an article discussed earlier this week on this web site (click here for more), Howard argued that the USPSTF recommendation to abandon PSA screening in men of ? 75 years of age was a key factor in the decrease in the incidence of prostate cancer in men in this age group. But is Dr. Howard right?

Dr. Howard is an expert in the statistical analysis of the SEER data. We certainly are not. However, we feel it is only appropriate to point out that ? according to SEER itself ? the incidence of diagnoses of prostate cancer in men ? 75 years has declined significantly over the period from 1992 to 2009, and in three distinct phases:

 • From 1992 to 1995, the age-adjusted incidence of prostate cancer dropped like a stone ? from a high point of 1,741/100,000 in 1992 to 1,110/100,000 in 1994 and to 993/100,000 in 1995 (a 43 percent decrease over a 4-year period).
 • From 1995 to 2000, the age-adjusted incidence then flat-lined. As we have seen, it was 993/100,000 in 1995 and in 2000 it was exactly 1,000/100,000. To all intents and purposes, there was no significant change in the incidence of prostate cancer in men ? 75 years during those 6 years.
 • From 2000 to 2009, the age-adjusted incidence has been falling at a fairly steady rate, from 1,000/100,000 in 2000 to 631/100,000 in 2009 (a 37 percent decrease over 10 years).

Indeed, according to SEER, the decrease in the incidence of prostate cancer in men ? 75 years was 22 percent between 2007 (807/100,000) and 2009 (630/100,000).

Similarly, and again according to SEER itself ? the incidence of diagnoses of prostate cancer in all men declined significantly over the period from 1992 to 2009, and again in three distinct phases:

 • From 1992 to 1995, the age-adjusted incidence of prostate cancer again dropped like a stone ? from a high point of 237/100,000 in 1992 to 180/100,000 in 1994 and to 169/100,000 in 1995 (a 29 percent decrease over a 4-year period).
 • From 1995 to 2000, the age-adjusted incidence then increased gradually in all men ? from? 169/100,000 in 1995 to 183/100,000 in 2000 (an 8 percent increase over a 6-year period).
 • From 2000 to 2009, the age-adjusted incidence has been falling again at a fairly steady rate, from 183/100,000 in 2000 to 152/100,000 in 2009 (a 17 percent decrease over 10 years).

However, the gradual decrease in the incidence of prostate cancer in all American males over the past 10 years has not been steady. Rather, there has been some noticeable variation (up and down) from year to year.

If you want to look at these data for yourself, just have a look at the two comparative charts immediately below. (You can click on them to see larger versions.)

Age-adjusted prostate cancer incidence (75 and older; all races; 1975-2009)

Age-adjusted prostate cancer incidence (all ages; all races; 1975-2009)

So it is hard to know whether the USPSTF?s recommendation in 2008 really had the impact that Howard is claiming. It is just as justifiable to suggest that the continuing decline in incidence of prostate cancer diagnosis among men of 75 years and older was part of a continuing trend that had started 9 years earlier. We can all speculate about exactly why we have observed such a decline ? but attribution of a specific cause to this decline over any 3-year period may be much more difficult to justify.

DirAction NL3 Classmate PC

Consumer netbooks may be dying off, but in the classroom small and inexpensive PCs still play a role in helping educate students and familiarize them with technology. DirAction, a company specializing in education-centered technology, brings us the NL3 Classmate PC ($499 direct), designed to Intel's Classmate PC criteria and loaded up with software just right for developing minds. With a touch screen and convertible tablet design, the NL3 Classmate PC serves as netbook, tablet, and ereader, and is a good fit for any classroom.

Design and Features
The Classmate PC ?is clearly built from the ground up to be kid-proof and classroom friendly. The body is made from chunky plastic, with rounded edges and corners and a built-in carrying handle on the hinge. Stylus storage is built into the chassis, and the screen is resistant to both scratches and water?perfect for use in an environment where kids are still learning to be gentle with expensive electronics and spills are common.

The keyboard and touchpad are small enough that adult hands will find them pretty cramped, but for a child they're just the right size to begin learning to type and navigate. The resistive touch screen flips around and folds flat to become a touch-screen tablet, and works with both fingers and the included stylus.

The NL3 Classmate PC design pays extra attention to the 2-megapixel webcam, with both design features and specialized software for utilizing it as a learning tool. To facilitate this further the webcam is set just above the screen, but instead of being stationary in the bezel, the camera rotates, letting you easily reposition it whether you're using the PC in laptop or tablet mode.

Although it's designed for basic use by students, the NL3 Classmate PC still includes plenty of ports for connecting peripherals like monitors, flash drives, and so on. The convertible tablet is outfitted with two USB 2.0 ports, outputs for VGA (for monitors and projectors) and HDMI (for HDTVs and monitors), as well as two headphone jacks, a microphone input, and a card reader (SD/MMC). Inside the little laptop is a 250GB hard drive, 802.11n WLAN, Bluetooth 2.1, and a 10/100 Ethernet connection. The entire NL3 Classmate PC is covered by a one-year warranty, and a separate six-month warranty covers just the battery.

Software
Unlike a consumer netbook, which might come with software trials and samples, the NL3 Classmate PC has no commercial bloatware preinstalled. Instead it's decked out with a suite of educational apps for everything from language instruction to learning math. Among the most impressive of these apps is LabCam, which turns the laptop webcam into a scientific testing tool with time-lapse recording, kinematic tracking and analysis, a high-magnification "microscope" mode, and a universal logger that recognizes and digitally records from any digital, radial-dial, or fluid-based display. Microsoft Mathematics provides a full-featured graphing calculator for use in classes from basic arithmetic to pre-calculus. LanguageNut uses a mixture of songs, stories, and games to promote language learning and includes tools to help teachers measure and track student progress. Also included are ereader programs by Adobe, Oannis, and Foxit; MyScript note-taking tools; and art programs like Ani Paint 3 Pro and ArtRage 2 (previously seen on the Kupa X11 Pro Tablet ). Intel AppUp?Intel's app store for PCs?provides a source of future apps.

Performance
DirAction NL3 Classmate PC The NL3 Classmate PC is equipped with a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N2600 processor, a dual-core processor from Intel's Cedar Trail line. Pairing the processor with 2GB of RAM, the NL3 Classmate PC clearly isn't meant to match the performance of your home or business system, but it is sufficient to run its own wide array of educational tools. The dual-core processor scored 0.51 in CineBench R11.5, ahead of other Atom-powered Windows tablets, like the Kupa X11 Pro Tablet and the Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 (Intel Atom Z690) , and just ahead of comparable netbooks like the Dell Latitude 2120 ?and the Acer Aspire One D260-1270 .

DirAction NL3 Classmate PC

Despite its leading CineBench score, the NL3 Classmate PC fell slightly behind when tested with SYSmark 2007, scoring 41 overall. By comparison, the Dell Latitude 2120 and the Acer Aspire One D260-1270 both scored slightly higher scores overall (44 and 43, respectively).

The graphics performance afforded by the Intel Atom's integrated graphics processing is sufficient for the learning activities offered in the included software, but little else. Though the Atom N2600 does support DirectX 9 (DX9), it was unable to run our DX9 gaming test, Lost Planet 2. In 3DMark06, the NL3 Classmate PC scored 438 with medium details and 1,024-by-768 resolution. It was unable to run the test at higher settings.

The NL3 Classmate PC will also last through a full school day and into an evening of homework with the included 56Wh battery lasting 8 hours 18 minutes in MobileMark 2007. While this doesn't quite match the 9:04 of the Acer Aspire One D260-1270 with its 49Wh battery, it's ahead of the other comparable Windows tablets and netbooks, which all fall in the 7-8 hour range.

The DirAction NL3 Classmate PC is a versatile tool for teachers and students, though it may not impress when compared to consumer products. Despite its middling performance, the NL3 Classmate PC has plenty of features to help students get the most from the convertible netbook, and the combination of educational apps and classroom management software make it a good fit in schools.

Russia seeks to cool Assad's head

MOSCOW (AP) ? When Syria broached the possibility of using chemical weapons, the world's response was don't even think about it. But one voice in that chorus mattered more for Syrian ruler Bashar Assad: Russia, his key ally.

Russia has been Syria's key protector throughout the 16-month uprising that evolved into a full-blown civil war, shielding Assad's regime from international sanctions and providing it with weapons despite an international outcry. And after the opposition attack last week that killed four members of his inner circle, the Syrian strongman may have to seriously think about a getaway scenario, for which Russia's help will be essential.

"Assad can't afford not to listen to Russian signals," said Fyodor Lukyanov, the editor of Russia in Global Affairs magazine. "He understands quite well that if he angers Russia, it will step back, leaving him to his doom."

Lukyanov and other analysts say that Russia is maintaining a constant dialogue with Assad and warning him against crossing red lines, but its clout is limited.

"Russia certainly can't force Assad to step down," Lukyanov said. "What Russia can do is to tell him what are the limits he can't cross, and it has been doing that. It may tell him that if he uses chemical weapons that would mean his end."

He said that the Russian statement Tuesday regarding the Syrian chemical weapons threat also appeared to be an attempt to contain the damage the Syrian regime inflicted on itself.

Earlier this week, the Assad regime announced that it has chemical weapons and would use them in case of foreign aggression. Lukyanov and other Russian analysts said Assad's regime doesn't appear to intend to resort to its chemical arsenals. But some warned that Assad would be likely to step up military action.

Igor Korotchenko, a retired colonel of Russia's military general staff who is now editor of National Defense magazine, said that Assad could use heavy weapons against rebel-held areas, imitating Russia's action during two separatist wars in Chechnya.

"That's his only chance for retaining control over the country," Korotchenko said.

Despite occasional criticism of the Syrian ruler for excessive use of force and failure to launch reforms, Russia has placed its bets squarely on Assad's survival and shown no inclination of dropping its support for the strongman.

A squadron of Russian navy ships, including several assault vessels carrying marines, is heading toward the Syrian port of Tartus, the only naval base Russia has outside the former Soviet Union.

"Its mission is to evacuate Russian citizens if the situation worsens," Korotchenko said. "It's also a demonstration that Russia is a key player in the Middle East and a signal that there should be no foreign military interference in Syrian affairs."

Alexander Shumilin, the head of the Moscow-based Center for Analysis of Mideast Conflicts, said the Syrian statement about possible use of chemical weapons in case of a foreign attack reflected chaos and desperation in Assad's inner circle and further weakened his positions.

He said the Russian Foreign Ministry statement that reminded Assad of his international obligations sent a strong warning to Damascus that using chemical weapons would be suicidal. "That would mean crossing the red line and make Russia look like an accomplice," he said.

Shumilin said that even though Russia's leverage over Assad seems limited, the Syrian ruler would need Moscow's help to save his life if pushed against the wall. "Any survival option would require Russia to play a role," he said. "That means he has no reason to cut off a dialogue with Russia."

Although President Vladimir Putin has said Russia isn't considering providing asylum for Assad, Moscow is likely to offer help in a safe getaway to its ally if he's cornered. Russia's ex-Soviet neighbor and ally, Belarus, has been mentioned as a possible destination for the Syrian leader, but any escape plan would rely on Russian resources and military personnel.

Russia has said that its opposition to sanctions against Syria is driven not by its support for Assad himself, but a respect for international law that forbids foreign military intervention in internal conflicts without U.N. Security Council authorization. Russia has persistently called for talks between the Syrian regime and its foes, and staunchly opposed any plans that would demand Assad's ouster, saying that only the Syrian people can decide the country's fate.

In the latest show of support for Assad, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov assailed Washington on Wednesday for failing to condemn the opposition bombing that killed the four members of Assad's entourage as an act of terrorism, describing the U.S. stance as "awful."

Some analysts said that Russia's intransigence is rooted to a large extent in Putin's fear of perceived Western plots to destabilize his rule ? a claim he has made repeatedly while campaigning for a third term in March's election. Putin's anti-U.S. rhetoric and his warnings that Russia could be the target of Western pressure played well with the Russian leader's blue-collar support base.

"Russia's position on Syria is 90 percent driven by domestic factors," Shumilin said.

He added that Putin has viewed Syria as a bargaining chip in talks with the West as he bristled at U.S. criticism on his crackdown on opposition and on Russia's human rights record.

"Putin would like to play the Syrian card in relations with the West," said Shumilin. "But the West isn't going to bargain on such issues as U.S. missile defense plans or support for democracy in Russia."

Putin may now realize that his policy on Syria has become a liability, but will not change it, Shumilin predicted. "It has gone too far, and it's too difficult now to change the course, even though they may wish to do so," the analyst said.

Heather's Simple and Sweet Shower | Mama Say What?!

This baby shower interview really touched my heart. You can feel the love that Mama Say What?! reader Heather and her family have for one another.

The shower was put on by Heather?s twin sister to reflect the nursery that Heather had set up for her soon-to-be little girl. I love the touches of color and the rustic feel.

The whole shower was put together in such a way that it screams style and sophistication without going overboard.

Thank you for sharing this precious moment in your life with us Heather, I really enjoyed putting this article together for all of our readers.

Who threw your baby shower for you?

My twin sister threw my shower for me. As always, she was amazing and thought of everything. I didn?t have to do anything but figure out what to wear that would be slimming.

Was the shower co-ed or ladies only? Why did you decide to go that way?

Our shower was co-ed as we have a small family and wanted everyone to be able to celebrate with us. My father became a proud papa the moment he heard we were expecting and wanted to be included. We couldn?t say no to a proud papa bear!

How far along were you? Did you know the gender? Did that make a difference in the theme?

I was 35 weeks along when the shower was held on a beautiful May day.

By the time of the shower, everyone knew that we were expecting a girl and that her name was Audrey Laine. I?d had the name picked out since eighth grade when I did a biography on and fell in love with Audrey Hepburn.

Audrey shares her middle name with my sister. The theme for the shower was based on her nursery ? owls, nests, aqua and brown. I didn?t want too much of a theme or any cartoon characters, I just wanted something simple, sweet and a little rustic.

My sister did all of the decorations herself. She used twine, book pages, burlap, canvas and aqua paper products to decorate our home and porch. I loved the natural elements she chose.

She made personalized thank you tags attached to small bags of birdseed as favors for the guests.

What was your favorite game that you played at the shower?

We did not play any games at the shower. My girlfriend made two pillows ? one in aqua and one brown that were raffled off to guests.

What was your favorite element of the shower?

My favorite element of the day was that I was surrounded by all of my family and friends. It was a celebration of our marriage and the fruits of that strong union.

The day of my shower will always be extremely bittersweet. My grandmother spent the day with us, enjoying sweet treats, chatting with her family and talking about Audrey?s future. She passed away on the car ride home from my shower, holding my grandfather?s hand. She simply went to sleep peacefully. I have to believe she felt loved and knew that her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren would have beautiful and long lives.

What did you buy your hostess as a thank you gift?

I can?t remember! I?ll call my sister to find out.

If you were to throw a baby shower for your friend or relative, what is one thing that you would use from the shower that you attended?

I would keep the focus of the shower on celebrating the new life that is about to join the world.

While I adored the decorations, the delicious food and all the other details that made it a fantastic party, it is the words of wisdom from a grandmother ready to move on, the well wishes from friends, the support of other parents and the pride in a papa?s voice as he dreams of his granddaughter?s eyes and voice that make the day memorable.

That feeling of anticipation and hope is what I would try to duplicate at every shower from now on.

Harris Receives NSA Certification for Soldier Radio Waveform in ...

 • First radio to receive National Security Agency Type-1 certification to operate the JTRS-developed Soldier Radio Waveform.
 • SRW delivers interoperable voice, data and high-bandwidth networking capability to forces at the tactical edge, resulting in enhanced situational awareness and command and control.
 • Demonstrates Harris commitment to U.S. DoD open-standard wideband waveforms under JTRS Enterprise Business Model.

Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has received National Security Agency Type-1 certification to implement the Soldier Radio Waveform (SRW) in the Harris Falcon III? AN/PRC-117G multiband manpack tactical radio. This marks the first-ever fielding of Type-1 radios utilizing SRW.

SRW was developed by the DoD?s Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program to enable the digital battlefield by providing warfighters at the tactical edge with voice, data and mobile ad-hoc networking capabilities. Harris has been providing Type-1 certified wideband tactical communications systems to the DoD for more than four years.

?Harris is proud to deliver the first Type-1 certified implementation of the JTRS Soldier Radio Waveform. This is a major investment that underscores our ongoing commitment to open-standard wideband waveforms that enable networking at the tactical edge,? said Dana Mehnert, group president, Harris RF Communications. ?SRW?s availability in the Harris AN/PRC-117G broadens the radio?s interoperability with current radios and ensures compatibility with future radio platforms operating JTRS waveforms. We commend the U.S. Army and JTRS program for their support of competition in tactical radio development and look forward to bringing continued innovation to the field on behalf of the warfighter.?

Harris invested its own funds to port, integrate and validate SRW for fielding through the JTRS program Enterprise Business Model (EBM), in coordination with the JTRS Network Enterprise Domain. The EBM encourages companies to invest their own capital to develop next-generation solutions in tactical communications that integrate JTRS waveform software. In doing so, the EBM stimulates competition, increases innovation, and reduces costs through software re-use. The AN/PRC-117G has successfully demonstrated interoperability with multiple vendor platforms and capability to communicate real-time voice and data using SRW as part of the JTRS Interoperability Quicklook laboratory test.

?Certification and fielding of SRW on the Harris? AN/PRC-117G radio strongly validates the ability of the JTRS Enterprise Business Model to enable increased competition and innovation within the defense tactical networking industry, allowing greater flexibility and improved affordability in fielding of JTRS capabilities,? according to the JTRS Network Enterprise Domain Program Manager.

The Harris Falcon III AN/PRC-117G is the first wideband manpack radio system with a JTRS-certified Software Communications Architecture and NSA Type-1 certified information security. Field-proven with more than 20,000 radios shipped, the AN/PRC-117G enables unprecedented situational awareness through wideband networking of the battlefield and delivering critical real-time information to warfighters on the move. The AN/PRC-117G supports a growing number of network-enabled missions such as intelligence reporting and analysis, collaborative chat, route planning, MEDEVAC, convoy tracking and checkpoint biometrics and was specifically designed to host advanced government waveforms.

Harris RF Communications is the leading global supplier of secure radio communications and embedded high-grade encryption solutions for military, government and commercial organizations. The company's Falcon? family of software-defined tactical radio systems encompasses manpack, handheld and vehicular applications. Falcon III is the next generation of radios supporting the U.S. military's Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) requirements, as well as network-centric operations worldwide. Harris RF Communications is also a leading supplier of assured communications? systems and equipment for public safety, utility and transportation markets ? with products ranging from the most advanced IP voice and data networks to portable and mobile single- and multiband radios.

HBT: Red Sox send Lillibridge to Indians

Brent Lillibridge is on the move again.

Traded from the White Sox to the Red Sox in the Kevin Youkilis deal and then almost immediately designated for assignment by Boston, Lillibridge has now been dealt to the Indians for minor leaguer Jose De La Torre.

He?s expected to join the Indians? active roster and will serve in his usual utility man role. De La Torre is a 26-year-old Double-A middle reliever, so this is pretty close to a giveaway deal.

Lillibridge had an out of nowhere power surge for the White Sox last season, but he?s a 28-year-old career .212 hitter with a .630 OPS in 295 games overall.

What You Really Don't Realize Regarding House Plans May Possibly

Performing home improvement doesn?t need to be a daunting task. Improving your home can be fun and easy, and make your home environment much more enjoyable. Make-over the areas you like and make them into areas you love. Follow the tips below and you will be able to turn your home into your dream home.

One way you can improve the exterior appearance of your home, is to plant brightly colored flowers. Chose ones that are appropriate for each season. Further, trim the bushes and hedges, and keep your lawn mowed and manicured. These simple improvements can instantly boost the look of your home.

Refurbishing an unfinished basement floor can bring the space together while increasing the functionality of the basement. Family members and friends will want to go down there more than they did before and one can create a new area to entertain guests. Putting down a wood, carpet, or synthetic floor will really improve ones basement.

You can waste a lot of money and hot water by failing to properly insulate your hot water heater. Stop by a home improvement store and purchase an insulating jacket to enclose your hot water heater. Ideally, the insulation will be about 3 inches thick. This is an affordable and easy way to help your water tank to retain as much as 75 percent more heat that would ordinarily be lost.

An inexpensive way to give your kitchen a fresh look without spending thousands on new cabinets is to give them a face lift. Install new hard ware and recondition them with oil to make them look new. Depending on the material of the cabinets, you might be able to paint them too.

Do not underestimate the value of a high quality door. It is the first and last thing your guests will see. You can lose a great deal of heat through a poorly fit and uninsulated door. If your door frame or locks are old or poorly made, you lose security and peace of mind.

Use scribe pieces to fill in any gaps that you may have when installing cabinets. Use them along the wall to make sure that the drawers are not going to get hung up on the wall or cause a gouge in your wall. This allows for a neat finish along the wall, and will help disguise any curves in the wall.

Improve your front entrance curb appeal by adding oversized house numbers and a large size light fixture. Making your entrance eye catching and appealing will increase the value of your home and the homes around you. If your neighbors like your improvements, they may try it themselves and increase the value of the whole neighborhood.

So, ?that wall has got to go? on that home improvement project! Stop! Before you demolish something double check the existing structure! It is easy to just tear down a wall and not know what is inside of it. There may be electrical components that need to be in tact that you may want to keep.

If you?re planning a major addition to your home, consider the cost of insurance before starting construction. Wood is always more expensive to insure because it is highly flammable. Steel and cement framed structures will cost less to insure because they are highly flame retardant. A conversation with your insurance agent before you begin to build could save you thousands.

As you can see, home improvement can be very easy. With the tips above, you can accomplish the task of turning your home into your private sanctuary, a place you are proud to call home. What are you waiting for? Go ahead and start that home improvement project you?ve been thinking about.

(AP) ? "The Twilight Saga" is gonna need a bigger garage.

It was announced at Sunday's Teen Choice Awards that the supernatural franchise has won 41 surfboard-shaped trophies since 2008, including awards earned this year for the penultimate film installment, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 1."

"Twilight" stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner were on hand to pick up this year's batch of boards, as well as the ultimate choice award, the teen-fueled show's version of a lifetime achievement award.

"It's amazing you guys are still around and just as strong and just as loyal," Lautner said over screams from the crowd.

Stewart was honored as the choice romance movie actress and as choice female summer movie star for "Snow White & the Huntsman."

Other multiple winners included "The Hunger Games," Emma Stone, One Direction, "The Vampire Diaries," Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, who picked up her 20th trophy, the most ever won by a female artist.

"I just feel so honored that I get to have you guys in my life," a beaming Swift told fans.

Teen Choice Awards host and new "The X Factor" judge Demi Lovato said 134 million votes were cast for the 14th annual awards, which honor film, TV, music and sports stars in such silly categories as choice hottie, villain, liplock and hissy fit.

"Are there even that many teens?" asked ceremony co-host and "Glee" actor Kevin McHale.

Bieber won his 12th trophy and performed his tune "Boyfriend," while his girlfriend and birthday girl Selena Gomez, who won the choice music group trophy, was presented with a cake and a rendition of "Happy Birthday" from the crowd inside the Gibson Amphitheatre.

Other winners on hand to accept their awards included Ellen DeGeneres for choice comedian, Zac Efron for choice drama actor and drama movie for "The Lucky One" and Jonah Hill for choice comedy movie for "21 Jump Street."

Hill, who lost the supporting actor Oscar earlier this year to Christopher Plummer, used his acceptance speech to poke fun at the 82-year-old "Beginners" co-star.

"I'd just like to point out that he's not nominated for anything tonight," joked Hill, who co-wrote and executive produced the movie.

The Hollywood frolic was televised live on Fox just two days after the midnight massacre at a Colorado movie theater showing "The Dark Knight Rises," killing 12 and injuring 58. The movie wasn't up for any awards nor was there any reference to the tragedy during the show.

"I was devastated when I heard," said Lovato on the red carpet before the show. "It is just really horrible that we can't even feel comfortable going to the movie theater, and that extra police have to be at movie theaters now. It is just really sad that our world has come to that."

The Teen Choice Awards also aired in the wake of a fog machine malfunction that forced the evacuation the night before of a Hollywood nightclub that hosted a Teen Choice Awards pre-party featuring the boy band Midnight Red.

Los Angeles Fire department spokesman Brian Humphrey said six people, ages 8 to 20 years old, were taken to the hospital for problems ranging from headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath and cryogenic burns.

Tea & Cupcakes for One ? Fruity Peach Green Tea, Mango - Blogs

My love of tea has finally reached its peak ? and I think it?s going to enjoy its reign up at the top of my ?Things I Love Dearly? list for a long time!? I am happy to report that I am now drinking tea 5 days a week (sometimes 6; it varies) and that I?ve developed a nice little routine for myself the same?way java fanatics gulp down their coffee in the?morning.? I?ve been alternating between coconut green tea, sticky toffee pudding, and my cute little box of Celestial Seasoning fruit flavours in blueberry, raspberry, black cherry, and country peach.?

Never did I think I would love tea this much though.? Growing up, my only brush with tea was at dim sum restaurants.? Then bubble tea and loose leaf tea entered my world and everything changed.? I daydream about the type of tea I?m going to get during my next tea run.? I keep up with all the new seasonal flavours that come out, ready to be sniffed from their canisters and sipped from mugs and tea cups.? And like clothes and accessories, I coordinate and match my tea to my cupcakes.? It?s not an obsession, it?s enthusiasm!

So, for the first time ever, I am posting about cupcakes without actually talking about cupcakes.? All I will say is that Wedding Cake Shoppe?s fruity mango cream cupcake on vanilla is delightful and like mango mousse on vanilla clouds.? My dear sweet cupcakes will just have to share the spotlight on this one because?the tea is clearly the star of the show!? Make way for the sweet and lovely peach green tea and mango cupcake from The Wedding?Cake Shoppe!

My previous Wedding Cake Shoppe posts?solely focused on cupcakes, scrapbooking, and beautiful decor and while all of those things?still play a huge part in?my personal Wedding Cake Shoppe experience, I am absolutely smitten with their loose leaf tea.? I KNOW.? Tea.? And?cupcakes.? With cupcakes.? At a wedding cake shop.? I love?Toronto.? Given how?the shop has ample space and seating, it?s totally feasible to sit down with a cuppa and cupcake (or macaron!? Or all three if you?re?feeling adventurous) for a quiet, peaceful afternoon.? Their drink?menu is actually pretty awesome as it consists of coffee drinks (americanos for $2, lattes and cappuccinos for $3.25), homemade hot chocolate ($3.50), cold glasses of milk at $2.50 (perfect for the milk and chocolate enthusiasts at heart!), and LOTS of?loose leaf?tea!? Priced at $2.25, flavours include earl grey, chamomile, green sencha, English breakfast, chai raspberry, fruit explosion,?peppermint, jasmine, vanilla rooibos, and my?beloved pick,?peach green tea.

I love the fact that Cindy and Sarah serve tea and drinks at their shop to go along with their cupcakes and macarons,?yes, BUT, what I love even more?? THE TEA PRESENTATION AND ACCESSORIES!? The shop is all colour, freshness,?sweetness, and beauty?so I shouldn?t have?expected any less when it came?to their tea and?drinks (just look at the gorgeous, dainty pink plate that accompanied my chocolate banana cream pie cupcake?the last time!), but I was still taken aback by how fabulous their tea ?service? was!? I didn?t get my tea in a paper cup.? I didn?t even get my tea in a mug.? I got my?piping hot peach green tea in a freakin? adorable pink and gold tea pot/teacup set!? You know, the type of tea pot that looks like a whole teapot but is really the kind that has a tea cup?for a bottom?? Yes, one of those.? And when I gushed to Sarah about how cute the tea pot was, she told me her and Cindy find great accessories along Queen West so there you go!

It was like getting the 5-star treatment.? And for $2.25?!??Jackpot!? Peach green tea is my favourite cold?bubble tea to get when I?m out and this?hot loose-leaf version didn?t disappoint.? It was an amazing fruity tea that tasted just like bubble tea but hot.? It didn?t have a gritty aftertaste, it?certainly didn?t?taste like diluted flavoured hot water, and it?was?bright, crisp, and delicious with my sweet and creamy mango cupcake.? Even though Cindy and Sarah are up to their eyeballs in wedding orders and cake decorating, they really do a fantastic job with making every visit to their shop a memorable, happy experience and that is what?s so special to me.? I mean, seriously, every single time I?m there new fresh flowers in vases are sitting on every table, the shop is immaculate, and every visit feels like a fresh start.? Cupcakes and tea aren?t just food and drink to me; they mean so much more when you enjoy them in a welcoming atmoshphere that is?beautiful on the inside and out.??????

*****

The Wedding Cake Shoppe is located at 859 College Street, just west of Ossington Ave.? They are open 6 days a week (closed on Tuesdays) and their weekday hours are from 11am-7pm, weekend hours from 11am-5pm.? You can check out their official website here, and follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

AmpSurf offers locals a new lease on life | StAugustine.com

ERICA A. HERNANDEZ

Daniela Ostertag witnessed a rare sight on Friday. She watched her husband, retired veteran David Ostertag, ride a glorious wave onto the shores of Frank Butler Beach. She looked on as he caught a wave and surfed like a pro.

?To see the smile on his face, he?s in heaven,? Daniela said as she cheered David on.

David was one of four wounded veterans who participated in the Association of Amputee Surfers surfing clinic on Friday and Saturday. This was AmpSurf?s first stop in Florida.

David, 51, served in the military for 27 years in a variety of roles. From the frontlines of Baghdad to a combat engineer, Ostertag witnessed a lot during his time. He now suffers from multiple traumatic brain injuries, latent cognitive memory problems, post-traumatic stress disorder and torn ligaments in his knees and shoulders among other places.

?It?s kind of hard to get up and get out sometimes. I was hesitant about coming out here today. My balance isn?t what it used to be but I love the water so I had give it a shot,? he said.

David and his peers were treated to surfing lessons from the professionals.

AmpSurf founder, Dana Cummings, led the group with dry-land instruction before he walked them into the waves.

Cummings has a story of his own as well. He didn?t let a car accident in 2002 stop him from learning how to surf, despite losing his left leg.

?I thought if a little farm boy from Maine with one leg can do this we can teach a lot more people how to,? Cummings said.

Cummings was one of the many AmpSurf members who made the long journey from Pismo Beach, Calif.

?The instructors work with people with not just physical but even mental disabilities. I was really excited for my husband to have the opportunity to get out there and learn with someone who can watch over him and encourage him,? Daniela said.

The AmpSurf organization was founded in 2003 and has since taught more than 1,000 people how to surf, according to Cummings.

?Surfing is one of those sports that the average person on the street thinks they can?t do. By taking these folks out there with different disabilities, they really think they can?t do something like this, so when we show them that they can it gives them a new lease on life,? Cummings said.

A renewed lease on life was just what David was looking for. After being medically retired from the military in February, he and his wife decided to move to Florida.

?This is what he?s wanted to do: just decompress and absorb everything. So this is the perfect opportunity,? Daniela said.

David plans to continue surfing now that he has a taste for the sport.

As she watched her husband jump to a stance on a surfboard on Friday, Daniela listed a handful of doctors that David sees on a regular basis.

Ghanaian Musicians Are Far Better Than Nigerian Musicians But ...

The issue of Hip ?Life (circular) musicians collaborating with Gospel musicians is no longer new to Ghanaian music fans, since this year has witnessed top musicians like Richie, Trigmatic, Asem, Praye and Sarkodie collaborate with Gospel musicians like Lady Prempeh, Herty Borngreat, and others.

One top Hip -life musician who is likely to join the trend before the end of the Year is Stay J. In a chat ,?he stated that he is looking at coming out with a Gospel album after the release of his next album before the end of the year.

Though he is not certain on which Gospel musician he is going to record with, he is looking at, going into collaboration with Nacy, because Nacy is one of his favorites and sees Nacy to be very talented; so if all things go well on his side, he will definitely choose Nacy.

Talking about the current state of Hip ? Life , he opined that he appreciates everything he?s doing as a musician and respects Hip ? Life as a very good musical genre he came to meet but; he doesn?t only want to be classified as Hip- Life musician but rather a Reggae, Afro-Pop, and any other forms of music.

He added that looking at the rate at which Hip ?Life and Ghanaian music is growing and the rate at which talented new musicians keep coming into the scenes, he believe Ghanaian music has a great future so everyone needs to come on board and help project it.

Comparing Nigerian music to Ghanaian music and why Ghanaian musicians are not being recognize on the international map, he Lamented that,?Ghanaian musicians are far better than Nigerian musicians?but rather the Nigerians are highly and quickly reorganized because they have lots of investors who are always ready to invest into their art and music, so it always makes it look as though they the Ghanaian musicians are always left behind.

As to what they the Ghanaian musicians are doing to attract investors , he said that, they are doing good music , especially looking at doing 60% English and 40% local language since the issue of language barrier also plays a role in getting to the international level.

Currently, one craze that is taking over our art and entertainment industry is that, secular musicians release Gospel songs when they become born again or repents for the Lord. Could STAY JAY, the ?Shashi Wowo? hit maker be plying this craze or he?s just tickling our fantasies? Your thought matters in this regard.
