Amazon Offers 'Amazon Pages' For Brands To Customize With Their ...

Just in time for the holiday shopping blitz, it looks like Amazon is opening a new chapter in its role as an online marketplace for third-parties to sell their goods. The company is quietly pushing a service called Amazon Pages, which lets companies set up their own pages on Amazon.com as ?custom destinations,? complete with www.amazon.com/brandname URLs and dynamic designs with large photos and social media links. Along with this, it is also offering Amazon Posts for companies to market themselves across Amazon and Facebook, and Amazon Analytics to measure how well all of the above is working.

The analytics are limited currently to how well brands? Amazon-led efforts are performing, but there isn?t really anything stopping the company from offering the same kind of measurements to brands for their positioning across the wider internet ? putting Amazon in closer quarters against the likes of Salesforce and Oracle in the process.

The bigger effort around pages, meanwhile, gives Amazon a significant leg up in its positioning brands and smaller businesses that might potentially look to Amazon as a way of running their full online operation, in place of their own standalone websites. The fact that there are URLs involved here also gives another intriguing twist to the news from many months ago about Amazon filing for dozens of generic new TLD names like ?.buy?, ?.group?, ?.room? and ?.shop?.

The initiative comes from the company?s Amazon Marketing Services division, which has also posted a PDF taking people through the process of working with the three features. That PDF guide was only created and posted yesterday.

We have reached out to Amazon to ask about these services.

In the meantime, here is what we see on the site:

The Pages feature lets brands, businesses and individuals register their own pages on Amazon, and it provides them with templates to create their storefronts. These let brands register amazon pages customized with their own names (for example http://www.amazon.com/techcrunch). Amazon Pages looks more dynamic than what you get at the moment: companies can include more photography, including ?hero? large images (two examples illustrated here), buttons to Facebook and Twitter pages, and ?merchandizing widgets? that let you select and place links to specific products of yours or others offered through Amazon.

Amazon Posts, meanwhile, is a foray into social marketing. Creators of Amazon Pages can use it to update their sites with new messages, and Amazon lets users cross-post those messages to Facebook pages as well. Think of it as a kind of HootSuite-lite, with the ability to schedule updates and cross-post messages in a couple of places. ?You can enhance your words with an image or a product. And you can plan ahead, scheduling the release of a series of posts on successive days,? Amazon writes. For now, Posts looks like it is limited to Facebook and Amazon itself but given that Twitter is also included in the Pages social widgets, you could see this also getting added to the mix.

Less clear is where sites like Pinterest and Fancy ? which are more closely aligned with Amazon?s marketplace, product-focused aesthetic ? might fit into the mix.

Finally, the analytics piece plays on Amazon?s position as a big data powerhouse in its own right: here the company is offering a dashboard for companies to monitor how well their Pages and Posts are performing, covering areas like reach, view and purchase lift, to help ?demystify the impact of social marketing,? according to the company.

Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN), is a leading global Internet company and one of the most trafficked Internet retail destinations worldwide. Amazon is one of the first companies to sell products deep into the long tail by housing them in numerous warehouses and distributing products from many partner companies. Amazon directly sells or acts as a platform for the sale of a broad range of products. These include books, music, videos, consumer electronics, clothing and household products. The majority of Amazon?s...

What is Iran's role in Israel-Gaza violence?

As Israel and Gaza continue their airstrikes, the effects of the Arab Spring could affect the conflict's outcome as leaders, including Egypt's newly elected president, denounce Israel's aggression. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

By Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

It was an unguarded comment that may have strayed close to the truth: Britain?s Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks said he believes tensions over Iran were behind the Israel-Gaza violence.

That remark ? made in a radio studio when he thought he was off the air ? echoes a theory that Tehran?s fingerprints are all over the current escalation of violence. ?

Realizing that he was actually live on air, Sacks did not elaborate on his theory but Western intelligence agencies and the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) do agree that longer-range rockets being fired toward Tel Aviv are Iranian-manufactured Fajr-5 missiles.

The Fajr-5s are assembled locally after being shipped from Iran via Egypt?s Sinai region from where they are smuggled into Gaza through tunnels, the IDF says on its own public information site.

Israel believes weapons travel via Sudan ? a theory underlined when it launched airstrikes on an apparent arms factory there last month, killing two people.

Digitalglobe / AFP - Getty Images, file

This combo of two satellite pictures released by DigitalGlobe shows the Yarmouk military manufacturing facility in Khartoum on October 12 (L) and on October 26, (R), two days after blasts at the factory, which the Sudanese government blamed on an Israeli airstrike.

Two Palestinian militant groups - Islamic Jihad and Hamas - have claimed to have fired Fajr-5s.?Hamas calls its rockets "Palestinian made" and does not acknowledge receiving weapons from Iran, although it does refer to Iran as a "supporter of the resistance."

From Sudan to cyber, secret war with Iran heats up

A senior Iranian lawmaker has denied supplying Hamas with weapons. "We deny having delivered the Fajr-5 to the Palestinian resistance,? Allaeddine Boroujerdi, head of the Tehran parliament's foreign affairs committee said on Saturday, according to the Daily Star newspaper in Lebanon.? He added that Hamas was ?perfectly capable of producing the arms it needs.?

So who is telling the truth?

On Monday, the Wikileaks site reposted on Twitter a link to a 2009 diplomatic cable, first leaked last year, detailing Israeli intelligence on how Iran was supplying Hamas with long-range weapons and how such artillery was being brought into Gaza.

That viewpoint is shared by retired General Barry McCaffrey, a security consultant and NBC News analyst, who told MSNBC?s Alex Witt: ??I think the Iranians have manipulated particularly [Lebanon-based] Hezbollah but also Hamas. They've equipped them with significant amounts of rocketry. One of the unclassified figures was 120,000 rockets in either southern Lebanon or Gaza in the range of Israel, so the Iranians are actively promoting trouble in Syria and Lebanon and Gaza.?

Jane Kinninmont, senior research fellow at the British think tank Chatham House, told?NBC News? U.K. partner Channel 4 News there were some indications that shifting allegiances might point to Iran?s motives.

"In the background, for more than a year, Qatar, Jordan and other Gulf states have been trying to prise Hamas away from its recent alliance with Iran in return for stronger support from the Arab world," she said. ?"Iran may be trying to wreck this by dragging Hamas back into a military conflict where it needs its Iranian rockets.?

Supporting that theory, Iran?s semi-official Fars news agency on Sunday accused Qatar of helping in the killing of Hamas military leader Ahmed Jabari by planting spy devices in Gaza.?It alleged that the emir of Qatar, King Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, distributed watches and ballpoint pens among Hamas leaders when he visited the area in October, and that those items contained transmitters that emit signals to Israeli satellites.

Israel steps up targeted attacks in heavily populated Gaza; mediation efforts gather pace

But other experts believe Iran?s role in this particular outbreak of violence is overstated.

?It would not be a surprise but I think it is unlikely,? Ali Ansari, professor of modern history at St. Andrews University in Scotland and senior research fellow at Chatham House, told NBC News.

?I don?t think even Iran would be stupid enough to provide a pretext for a war with Israel, which is something neither side wants despite all the rhetoric.?

Daniel Levy, director for Middle East and North Africa for the London-based European Council on Foreign Relations, said: ?Certainly Israel will be looking at the wider issues such as Iran but I think there?s a risk of reading too much into Iranian involvement.

?There?s a war of narratives going on here. Israel will tend to blame Iran for everything it can and vice versa.?

With the rise of Islamism in the wake of the Arab Spring, and the shift of its base from Damascus to Doha, Hamas has been less reliant on Iran, the main Shiite power in the region, for backing against Israel.

?Hamas is now firmly aligned with the Sunni Arab camp and can distance itself from Iran,? Levy noted.

So is the current violence really a precursor to a showdown with Iran? Unlikely, according to Ansari and Levy.

Yonatan Touval, a Tel Aviv-based analyst, told the New York Times: ?If Israel?s political leadership is treating the current operation in Gaza as something of a rehearsal for a future war with Hezbollah and Iran, it is rehearsing the wrong play.?

Nevertheless, Iran-Israel tension remains high. ?Tehran is getting a bit of a break at the moment because all the attention is being focused elsewhere,? Chris Doyle, director of the?Council?for?Arab-British Understanding, told NBC News. ?But if there is a truce agreement and current violence tails off, Iran remains the number one issue for Israel and the wider region.?

Ayman Mohyeldin, NBC News Correspondent in Cairo, contributed to this report.

Obama in Cambodia after rousing Myanmar welcome

U.S. President Barack Obama puts his hands together after the conclusion of his speech at Yangon University?s Convocation Hall in Yangon, Myanmar, Monday, Nov. 19, 2012. In a historic trip to a long shunned land, Obama on Monday showered praise and promises of more U.S. help to Myanmar if the Asian nation keeps building its new democracy. "Our goal is to sustain the momentum," he declared with pride as the first U.S. president to visit here. (AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais)

Obama who touched down Monday morning, becoming the first U.S. president to visit the Asian nation also known as Burma, said his historic visit to Myanmar marks the next step in a new chapter between the two countries. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)

(AP) ? Making history twice within hours, President Barack Obama on Monday became the first U.S. president to set foot in Cambodia, a country once known for its Khmer Rouge "killing fields." He left behind flag-waving crowds on the streets of Myanmar, the once internationally shunned nation now showing democratic promise.

Unlike the visit to Myanmar, where Obama seemed to revel in that nation's new hope, the White House has made clear that Obama is only in Cambodia to attend an East Asia Summit and said the visit should not be seen as an endorsement of Prime Minister Hun Sen and the government he has led since the 1980s.

Indeed, Obama's arrival in Cambodia lacked the euphoria of his greeting in Yangon, Myanmar, where tens of thousands of people lined city streets to cheer the first American president to visit a country that had long been isolated from the West. "You gave us hope," Obama declared in Yangon.

In Phnom Penh, the sun was already setting by the time Air Force One landed. Small clusters of Cambodians gathered in the streets to watch the motorcade pass, but there was none of the outpouring that greeted Obama in Myanmar.

Speaking to a national audience from the University of Yangon, Obama offered a "hand of friendship" and a lasting U.S. commitment, yet a warning as well. He said the new civilian government must nurture democracy or watch it, and U.S. support, disappear.

The visit to Myanmar was the centerpiece of a four-day trip to Southeast Asia that began in Bangkok and will end Tuesday in Cambodia, where Obama will visit with Chinese, Japanese and Southeast Asia leaders in addition to attending the East Asia Summit.

Obama celebrated the history of what he was witnessing in Myanmar ? a nation shedding years of military rule, and a relationship between two nations changing fast.

"This remarkable journey has just begun," he said.

In a notable detour from U.S. policy, the president referred to the nation as Myanmar in his talks with President Thein Sein. That is the name preferred by the former military regime and the new government, rather than Burma, the old name and the one favored by democracy advocates and the U.S. government.

Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said afterward that Obama's use of Myanmar was "a diplomatic courtesy" that doesn't change the U.S. position that the country is still Burma.

On his first trip abroad since his re-election earlier this month, Obama's motorcade sped him to the lakeside home in Yangon of longtime opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. He hugged her and lauded her as a personal inspiration. Suu Kyi spent most of the past 20 years in house detention at her home.

In remarks after their meeting, Suu Kyi echoed Obama's tone with an admonition of her own, one that could have been directed at her own ruling party as much as to the United States:

"The most difficult time in any transition is when we think that success is in sight," she said. "Then we have to be very careful that we're not lured by the mirage of success."

Rhodes said Obama was moved by the opportunity to visit Suu Kyi at her home ? and was pleased to see that she had prominently displayed a stuffed replica of the president's dog Bo in the house. Obama gave Suu Kyi the stuffed animal when she visited Washington earlier this year.

Crowds swelled at every intersection, yelling affectionately for Obama and his secretary of state, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"You are the legend hero of our world," one banner read.

Obama spoke at a university that was once the center of government opposition, and his message was as much a call for Myanmar to continue in its promising steps as it was a tribute to democracy in general. He held up the United States as an example of its triumph and its imperfections.

Coinciding with the president's visit, the government of Myanmar announced further human rights steps to review prisoner cases and de-escalate conflicts in ethnic regions of the country.

But Obama urged even more, calling for a government where, as he put it, "those in power must accept constraints."

"The flickers of progress that we have seen must not be extinguished," Obama said in an address televised to the nation.

Rhodes said the president was moved by the throngs of people who lined the streets to greet him during the visit. The president made one unscheduled stop at the Shwedagon Pagoda. After seeing the pagoda as Air Force One approached Yangon, then seeing the outpouring of support from the citizens for whom the site means so much, Obama personally decided to make the unscheduled stop, Rhodes said.

As Obama arrived in Cambodia, he was dogged by concerns from human rights groups that have cast Hun Sen as a violent authoritarian and have voiced apprehension that Obama's visit will be perceived within Cambodia as validation of the prime minister's regime. But administration officials say Obama, when he meets with Hun Sen on Monday, will raise concerns about the government's human rights record.

Still, many Cambodians credit Hun Sen with helping the country emerge from the horrors of the 1970s Khmer Rouge reign, when systematic genocide left 1.7 million dead. Vietnam invaded and ousted that regime in 1979. By 1985, Hun Sen had become prime minister.

CAUGHT IN THE WEB: Post election hangover, LEGOS and Facebook

Election Day is exciting in the media business but there is a little relief when the final story is filed.

Elections can become very consuming because our staff had to deal with all the local elections, plus we contributed to our company?s statewide coverage. Add that to the job of sifting through all the national stories that have been coming in from our content partners and it was a busy couple months.

Whew!

Now that the election is behind us, what?s next?

The newsroom almost has a quiet feel to it despite the fact our reporters still cover their beats, our page designers keep churning out the print editions and the website is rolling right along.

The post-election hangover might also have had an impact on the most popular stories on our website.

With readers possibly wanting some less serious reading, the top story on our website since the elections was a review on the Droid Razr Maxx HD smart phone by tech writer Matt Myftiu

Also among our top stories was a piece on how the Detroit Tigers are looking to improve the outfield and subsequent stories about the team signing outfielder Torii Hunter, A top 10 list of WWI movies that was published last year, a review of tablets and a story about NASA refuting the world will end on Dec. 21, 2012, as the Mayan calendar predicts.

While our readers have taken to some lighter reading, a few serious news stories were getting their share of views on our website.

In Taylor, there has been talk of teacher layoffs and contract negotiations as reported by David Komer. A robbery at a Lincoln Park Taco Bell caught our readers? attention and many commented on our Facebook page. Continued...

Out of Wyandotte came a sad story about alleged child abuse. That brought several comments from readers about what should be done if the parents truly abused their children.

In Riverview, we had a story about a man trying to lure a child into his vehicle. Parents,? please talk to your kids about dealing with strangers and ways to be safe. If you need more information, call your child?s school or local police department.

Who likes LEGO building blocks? That?s a trick question ? everyone does (Maybe not everyone, but I think they are cool).

We posted a story, some video and several great photos of a LEGO exhibit at The Henry Ford. If you like LEGOs, you should check it out.

Our Speak Out questions drew some pretty funny and interesting comments, but the question we posted on our website and Facebook page asking which treat was your favorite from Hostess quickly turned into a discussion on obesity and unions.

(The Hostess Company announced Friday it was going out of businesses because its bakers refused to end a strike).

Sometimes, I wish our readers would have a little more fun with our questions and not take things so seriously.

Also on Facebook, Jessica Hager Coleman was the 4,500th person to ?like? our page. Thank you, Jessica! And if you haven?t yet, please find us on Facebook and ?like? our page.

STATE FOOTBALL: No. 7 Piedra Vista smashes No. 10 St. Pius X

Click photo to enlarge

Piedra Vista quarterback Isaiah Valdez runs for a touchdown.

All week, the No. 7 Piedra Vista football team talked about one thing ? redemption.
Friday, the Panthers redeemed themselves with a 49-3 blow out of No. 10 St. Pius X in the first round of the state playoffs.
Bryson Martinez gained 202 yards on offense and scored three touchdowns to lead PV's offensive assault.
?We took care of the ball and everyone played as a team,? said the senior wide receiver. ?That was our best game this year.?
Junior quarterback Isaiah Valdez rebounded from a disappointing outing against Farmington last week to throw for two touchdowns while running for two more scores.
The win came in response to a 30-28 loss to the Sartans on Oct. 19 that ended the Panthers' unbeaten streak to start the season.
It was the first time PV had defeated St. Pius in school history after losing the previous six matchups and was the first playoff win for the Panthers since 2008.
A key injury hampered the St. Pius offense as running back Nic Stafford sat out the game with a leg injury.
?That running back was really good,? Valdez said. ?But one player isn't a team.?
Stafford's absence was felt immediately when Sartan running back Austin Baca fumbled 20 seconds into the game. Martinez recovered for the Panthers before scoring the opening touchdown four minutes later on a 17-yard pass from Valdez.
The PV quarterback extended the lead to 14-0 late in the first quarter, scampering 48 yards on an option play for six points.
The Panther defense stepped up again as Aaron Rino forced and recovered a fumble from St. Pius quarterback Javier Jaramillo two minutes into the second quarter.
The offense took just a minute and 20 seconds to respond with Valdez again hitting Martinez for a score, this time on a 20-yard bubble-screen pass.
The Sartans got on the board with a 37-yard field goal four minutes before halftime.
On the ensuing kickoff, Martinez fumbled the ball out at his own two0-yard line, pinning the Panthers deep in Sartan territory.
Martinez wasted no time making up for the error, taking a Valdez pitch 96 yards for a touchdown two plays later.
?I went in the huddle and told them it was my fault, and I?ll get them back,? Martinez said. ?I didn?t think it would come two plays later, though.?
The second half was more Panther domination.
Valdez and Stratton Waller each ran for a score and Beau Clafton intercepted two Sartan passes, returning the second one 84 yards for a touchdown.
The Panthers defense held the Sartan running game to 105 yards on 33 carries and forced four turnovers, while the offense gained 417 yards ? 289 of which came on the ground.
PV will now prepare for a road game against No. 2 Los Lunas on Friday or Saturday.
?We?re going to have to play a great game against a Los Lunas team that?s firing on all cylinders,? said Panthers? head coach Jared Howell. ?But that?s why they play the game, and when we stay together and play a complete game, we?re going to be a tough team.?
The PV players know what it will take to pull off an upset over the the unbeaten Tigers.
?We have got to play a better game than we did tonight,? Martinez said. ?We need to prepare with a good week of practice. They are a tough team and are 10-0 for a reason.?

Game and Fish launches new ?Recreational Access Arizona? web mapping tool

The Arizona Game and Fish Department has launched an exciting new web-based mapping tool, ?Recreational Access Arizona,? that provides hunters, anglers, and other outdoor recreationists with important information about access to and through private lands.

Recreational_Access_AZ_map_web.jpg

The free tool, which utilizes GIS mapping technology, is available at www.azaccessmap.com.

Recreational Access Arizona was developed as part of the Game and Fish Department?s efforts to secure, maintain and enhance public recreational access to private lands, or to federal or state-owned lands that are ?land-locked? by private lands. It provides a wealth of other information as well.

Want to see the boundaries of the Game Management Unit you?re in or where water catchments are located? Are you interested in what wildlife species are in a particular area? All the information is available with the click of a mouse anywhere on the map. The more places you click, the more information you can find.

To help get you started, just click on the ?How to Use the Map? link in the upper right-hand corner of the page after you?ve logged on.

Even more exciting is that you can create your own map using this tool with a topographic map, aerial images, or street maps as the background. Just export the map you make and print it out on your home printer, or take it in to a printing service to print a large map.

Development and maintenance of this tool was made possible through a grant that Game and Fish received from the Voluntary Public Access and Habitat Incentive Program, which is a federal program authorized in the 2012 Farm Bill.

The department plans to add information that is useful to hunters and other outdoor recreationists over time, so users are encouraged to use the ?Send Comments? link in the upper right-hand portion of the web page to e-mail comments for consideration.

Largemouth bass virus detected in Lake Pleasant
Fish disease poses no risk for people, pets or water supply

Arizona Game and Fish Department officials have confirmed the presence of largemouth bass virus in Lake Pleasant.

Lab tests on largemouth bass tissue samples collected during a routine survey in October by Arizona Game and Fish and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service personnel showed presence of the disease in some samples.?

While the virus can affect largemouth bass, it doesn?t pose a risk to people and pets, and the water is safe for drinking water supply and recreation.

?Largemouth bass virus is not known to infect any warm-blooded animals, and any fish that are caught by anglers are safe to eat,? said Marc Dahlberg, Game and Fish water quality program manager. ?However, we always recommend that people thoroughly cook any fish they intend to eat, and never use fish found dead or dying for food.?

Game and Fish has not documented any fish kills at Lake Pleasant associated with largemouth bass virus to date. At this time, fishing is still very productive and there have been no recreational impacts. Lake Pleasant is the top fishing recreation site in Arizona, producing more than 520,000 angler use days.

Prior to this sampling, the only fish health survey that had been conducted at Lake Pleasant was in 2002, and largemouth bass virus was not detected then. Therefore, the virus most likely entered the Lake Pleasant fishery within the past 10 years.

Dahlberg explained that although the virus can cause mortality in largemouth bass, not all bass become infected, and not every fish becomes sick. For instance, only five lakes in Texas suffered fish kills even though the virus was found in 23 of the state?s reservoirs.

?Usually the number of infected fish that die is relatively low compared to the entire population, with the virus mostly affecting older and larger fish,? said Dahlberg.

The virus has been found in 18 states dating back to 1991. In Arizona, Saguaro Lake, Bartlett Lake, Roosevelt Lake, and now Lake Pleasant have tested positive for the disease. There have been no impacts attributable to largemouth bass virus at Saguaro, Bartlett or Roosevelt to date.

Although other fish species can carry the virus, it only affects largemouth bass. It is not precisely known what triggers the activation of the virus into a disease outbreak, but it has been associated with stress events, such as high water temperatures. The virus appears to diminish over time.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department emphasizes that there are precautions the public can take to help stop the spread of the virus, as well as other aquatic invasive species, such as quagga mussels. One preventive measure that is vital is that people absolutely avoid transporting live fish or water from one body of water to another.

?You might be spreading an unwanted disease or even introducing an unwanted organism, such as quagga mussels, that could substantially affect a fishery or lake ecosystem,? said Dahlberg.??Don?t transport live fish caught from a lake ? period. It?s the wrong thing to do and it?s unlawful.??

It?s also important to clean, drain and dry your boat before leaving any lake at any time, and to disinfect your boat or wait at least five days before launching your boat on another water. In fact, at several lakes, including Lake Pleasant, it?s now the law that you do so. This is extremely important as the bass virus can live for up to seven days in standing water.

Other ways anglers and boaters can help stop the spread of aquatic invasive species:

  • Dispose of all unused bait in the trash, never in the water.
  • Never transfer live fish from one body of water to another.
  • Rinse any mud and/or debris from equipment and wading gear.
  • Drain any water from boats, bilge, bait buckets, and live wells before leaving the launch area. A mild mixture of bleach and water can be used to disinfect your equipment. Allow everything to air dry before moving to another body of water.
  • If you see any dead or dying fish, please report your observation to Arizona Game and Fish at (623) 236-7257.
  • Educate others to follow these steps.

More information on largemouth bass virus is available at:

Up to $10,000 reward offered in elk poaching case near Payson

The Arizona Game and Fish Department and the Arizona Elk Society are seeking the public?s help in finding the person(s) responsible for the illegal shooting of four elk in the Payson area in Game Management Unit 22.

OGT_web.jpg

Game and Fish officers investigating the case said that two young bull elk and one cow elk, all illegally shot and left to waste, were found in close proximity to each other in the Chaparral Pines community and were most likely poached between the evening of Oct. 24 and Oct. 25.

A fourth elk, also illegally shot, was found Oct. 31 in the same general area. Investigators believe it was poached on Oct. 27 or 28.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department?s Operation Game Thief Program is offering up to a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. An additional reward of up to $5,000 is being offered by the Arizona Elk Society for information leading to a conviction in the case.

?The wasteful poaching of this many elk is a travesty to those of us that work hard to improve the health and habitat of elk in Arizona,? said Steve Clark, president of the Arizona Elk Society.

Anyone with information regarding this case or others can call the Operation Game Thief Hotline toll free at (800) 352-0700 or use the online form at www.azgfd.gov/thief, and please reference OGT #12-002661. All calls will remain confidential upon request.

Endangered Mount Graham red squirrel numbers stable

As part of a conservation program for the endangered Mount Graham red squirrel, the Arizona Game and Fish Department, U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducted an annual squirrel survey and estimated approximately 214 animals in the Pinale?o Mountains in southeastern Arizona.

Mount_Graham_red_squirrel_web_1.jpg

The latest survey count is in line with the population numbers found in 2010, but represents a decrease of 26 squirrels from the 2011 estimate.

Small mammal species like the Mount Graham red squirrel typically have cyclical populations that depend on the conifer cone crop, their primary food resource. Biologists continue to explore new ways to conserve the species, including habitat improvements, squirrel research and consideration of a pilot captive breeding program.

The red squirrel survey is conducted annually in the fall by visiting a random sample of known middens (areas where red squirrels store or cache their cones).

The Mount Graham red squirrel population spiked to around 550 animals in the late 1990s, but typically ranges between 200 and 300 individuals. Habitat losses caused by fire and insect infestations and poor cone crops caused by drought are considered primary factors in the species? recent trends.

?Squirrel numbers commonly fluctuate due to available habitat and food resources, so it is not unusual to see a small drop in the population numbers,? says Tim Snow, nongame specialist for the Arizona Game and Fish Department. ?The lack of winter and summer rains over the last few years is suspected to have impacted the squirrels? cone crop.?

Mount Graham red squirrels live only in the upper elevation conifer forests of the Pinale?o Mountains and feed primarily on conifer seeds. Females produce two to seven young annually. The species was added to the endangered species list in 1987.

The multi-agency Mount Graham Red Squirrel Recovery Team, including the Coronado National Forest, Game and Fish, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, University of Arizona, Native American tribes and others, oversees conservation of the species.

High-flow?release at Glen Canyon Dam to be conducted on Nov. 19

The U.S. Department of the Interior will trigger the first ?high-flow?release? at Glen Canyon Dam since 2008 on Monday, Nov. 19. The release is part of a new long-term?strategy announced in May by Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar to meet water and power needs, as well as to allow better conservation of sediment downstream and?to better address the important resources in the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam.

Glen_Canyon_high_flow_release_web.jpg

In cooperation with five Interior agencies, the upcoming release is designed to take?advantage of sediment deposited by Colorado River tributaries as a result of recent rainstorms and monsoons. Scientists have determined that the right conditions exist to conduct a high-flow release to benefit downstream resources.

The total maximum release from the dam will reach approximately 42,300 cubic-feet-per-second, consisting of 27,300 cfs of full powerplant capacity releases and a bypass release through the four river outlet tubes sending an additional 15,000 cfs of water out over the Colorado River. The total duration of the high-flow release will be nearly five days,?but only about?24 hours at the peak release rate.

Fishing at Lees Ferry, 16 miles downstream from the dam, has been excellent this year, and this high-flow event should have no notable effects on fishing this fall or winter. The effect of this release is to loosen up some of the gravel?beds and prepare them for an excellent spawn by trout this spring.?More is being learned every year about how to use the operations of the dam to better conserve resources and to enhance fishing opportunities. Fall is a good time to go Lees Ferry and partake?of a unique fishing experience that you just can't find anywhere else.??

AZGFD volunteer coordinator receives ATHENA Young Professional Award

Jamie Lyons, the volunteer administrator with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, has received the ATHENA Young Professional Award from the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce. The honor recognizes her outstanding contributions as a young professional in her daily work, as well as her inspirational role as founder of the Veteran Career Assistance Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(C)(3) organization that helps military veterans returning home prepare for the transition into the workforce.

ATHENA_awards_2012_Jamie_Lyons_web.jpg
Since joining the department in 2008, Lyons (photo, center)?has earned her reputation as an outstanding leader. In her capacity as volunteer coordinator at Game and Fish, Lyons manages more than 3,000 volunteers statewide, is involved with program policies and procedures, links volunteers with key organizations and oversees the volunteer-operated organizational structure she created.

?Ms. Lyons is especially gifted when it comes to pairing the right people with the right tasks,? said Game and Fish Director Larry?Voyles. ?She has a true knack for recognizing talent in people that they might not even realize they have. Jamie is an outstanding leader who energetically embraces teamwork and generously shares her time and talent. We are tremendously proud of her, and grateful to have such a gifted person in our organization.?

Lyons is a U.S. Air Force Security Forces Veteran and holds a Master?s Degree in Business Administration. During her 10 years of active duty, she was stationed in Japan, Florida and Arizona, and served two deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. After separating from the military in 2008, she realized how difficult the transition can be for even the well-prepared. Although the Air Force provided some helpful tools, there was little person-to-person support available.?

?It?s difficult for a lot of vets to translate their military experience into civilian language for their resumes and interviews,? Lyons said. ?There was a real need for face-to-face services that could help veterans work through the process of transitioning to civilian life and finding their place in a civilian work force.?

To meet this need, Lyons founded the Veteran Career Assistance Foundation in August 2011, and has helped dozens of veterans transition into the civilian job market. It is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization that provides vets with free, face-to-face training, skills evaluations, resume writing, consulting and job placement services with some of the best professionals in the area, Lyons said.

?Developing relationships with local business owners who want veterans in the workforce has been essential for the success of the career assistance program,? Lyons said. ?We have actually lived the military life, so we know and really understand the needs of our veterans.?

One of the foundation?s awareness projects was?visible on Nov. 11, Veteran?s Day, when scores of vehicles outfitted with American flags?offered a show of support for veterans and gratitude for the freedoms they protect, Lyons said. To learn more about the foundation visit www.vetworkforce.org.

The prestigious ATHENA Awards were presented on Oct. 25 by the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, marking the 25th anniversary of the ATHENA Award Program. Winner of the?Young Professional Award, Jamie Lyons, is pictured in the photo above (center), with?Public Sector winner Deborah Ostreicher (left), and Private Sector winner Dr. Anne McNamara (right). The ATHENA program is operated in conjunction with ATHENA International, a foundation dedicated to creating leadership, business opportunities and a voice in government for women in their communities and around the world. Lyons was one of three winners chosen from 11 finalists and more than 80 nominations.

?Welcome back the trout? to Tempe Town Lake on Nov. 20

The trout are making their annual Thanksgiving comeback to Tempe Town Lake.

Get a behind-the-scenes look at wildlife center open house this weekend

A bald eagle, bobcat, ringtail, birds and reptiles ?What better way to spend the weekend than seeing all of this wildlife and more? The Arizona Game and Fish Department?s Adobe Mountain Wildlife Center will be hosting a free open house for the public on Saturday, Nov. 17 and Sunday, Nov. 18 from 10-3 p.m. daily.

Adobe_open_house_web.JPG

During this rare glimpse into the center?s operations, visitors will have the opportunity to see wildlife up close, view educational displays and meet wildlife experts.

The Adobe Mountain Wildlife Center is a wildlife triage, treatment and rehabilitation facility operated by Game and Fish in cooperation with the nonprofit Adobe Mountain Wildlife Center Auxiliary. Its original focus, when founded in 1983, was on treating and rehabilitating sick and injured wildlife. It is funded by the Heritage Fund, a voter-passed initiative that provides for wildlife conservation and education through Arizona lottery ticket sales.

Although the center continues to provide immediate triage and rehabilitation services?more than 1,000 sick or injured animals are brought to the facility annually?emphasis has shifted more toward wildlife education. Staff and volunteers conduct educational outreach programs at events and schools across the state, reaching more than 100,000 Arizonans a year.

The Adobe Mountain Wildlife Center is located north of Pinnacle Peak Road just west of I-17 in Phoenix. It is on the same property as the Adobe Mountain Juvenile Detention Center. Officers and volunteers will be giving directions for parking once at the facility.

Admission and parking for the open house are free, and food will be available for purchase.

For more information about the Adobe Mountain Wildlife Center, go online to www.azgfd.gov/wildlifecenter.

National Park Service issues mussel monitoring update for Lake Powell
National Park Service (Glen Canyon) news release from?Nov. 1, 2012

Recent monitoring samples from Lake Powell have revealed evidence of?microscopic?quagga mussel?larvae?and the National Park Service (NPS) has accelerated laboratory and field efforts to identify the source, reported Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Superintendent Todd Brindle. Quagga mussel larvae and DNA were found in separate water samples collected?near Antelope Point?and Glen Canyon Dam. "We don't know yet if there is a population trying to establish in the lake," said Brindle. "The DNA can last after the organism is dead, so there is a possibility that it could have washed off boats that had been in other infested waters."??

NPS aquatic?ecologist?Mark Anderson provided additional details on the sampling results.?"The bodies of four?larval mussels were found in four?different samples near the Glen Canyon Dam. The sampling process kills mussel larvae so it is not known if any?of them were alive in the lake," stated Anderson.?"One of them had a broken shell, suggesting that it was dead when it was collected."

Anderson explained that testing?occurs?using two separate methods: DNA and microscopy. The DNA method is more sensitive and potentially detects the presence earlier, but can be less accurate. Detection using microscopes is more accurate but requires an organism or piece of organism that is large enough to be visible in the microscope. Samples are taken?using both methods at multiple sites around Lake Powell.??

Superintendent Brindle remains hopeful that the?monitoring results are?not?evidence of an established?population?of mussels. If it is an early?detection, the mussels may not?establish and grow into adults, said Brindle.?"Scientists are not sure why, but many western waters have shown similar findings and then never developed a noticeable population,?such as at?Lake Granby, Lake Pueblo, Electric Lake, Red Fleet, Navajo Lake, Grand, Shadow Mountain, Willow Creek, and even Lake Powell in 2007."??

In the meantime, monitoring and testing?by the NPS will?continue.??"It is possible that these results will not be duplicated and a population of quagga mussels is not developing," said Anderson.?In addition to the water sampling,?NPS divers and underwater remote operated vessels will be used to search for adult mussels.?"However, if test results continue to?show positive for DNA or if there are adult mussels visible,?it could indicate that a population is starting," Anderson said.??

If there?is a population of mussels, Superintendent Brindle said he is committed to working with all agencies and?partners to determine the extent of the population and investigate?and implement?strategies for control. Depending on the extent of an early population, removing, wrapping or burying the mussel colony might be effective in preventing additional reproduction.

"We?will continue the boat?inspections that are currently in place," Anderson stated. "Prevention is still the most effective?way to fight invasive species. Continue to clean, drain, and dry your?boat?and equipment after every use."??

Additional monitoring?information?and updates are posted on the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area webpage at?www.nps.gov/glca/parknews/musselupdate.htm.?

Teenager grew own drugs after debt to dealers got out of hand

A DUBLIN youth who grew his own cannabis to avoid adding to a debt he already owed to drug dealers, will be sentenced in the new year.

Dublin Children's Court heard that the 17-year-old boy's family have had to take out loans to clear his debt which "runs into thousands of euro".

The teenager, whose drug problem spiralled out of control following the death of his father, pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis following a search of his south Dublin home on November 30 last year.

In evidence, Garda Marcus Ryan said a warrant was obtained to carry out a search and cannabis worth ?10 was found in the teenager's bedroom. A cannabis plant with a street value of ?200 as well as "growing equipment" were also recovered.

Judge Ann Ryan adjourned sentencing the youth, who was accompanied to his hearing by his mother, until January 10.

Hamas tells Sudan it will avenge Israeli bombing of arms plant

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - The exiled leader of Hamas told Sudan on Friday his Palestinian group would take revenge on Israel for the deadly bombing of an arms factory in Khartoum, state news agency SUNA reported.

Treated as a star guest at an Islamist conference in Sudan, Khaled Meshaal used the meeting to rally support for Hamas's conflict against Israel in the Gaza Strip and told worshippers at Friday prayers his group would avenge the factory blast.

"Hamas will take revenge for Sudan from Israel in retaliation for its aggression ... You will hear good news soon," Meshaal told said at the mosque of the Sudanese armed forces in Khartoum, SUNA said.

He did not elaborate but said Hamas's use of long-range missiles showed it was able to surprise Israel.

Sudan blamed an Israeli air strike for the factory blast last month which killed four people and partially destroyed the country's biggest weapons plant.

Israel, which has been bombing the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip for two days [ID:nL5E8MGACP], has not commented on the accusations, but Israeli officials have accused Sudan of funneling weapons from Iran to Gaza.

"The time of Israel achieving victories against the Arabs has come to an end," Meshaal said.

Israel has bombed targets in Gaza for two days, saying that was in response to escalating missile strikes from the territory. Medics say 22 Palestinians have been killed. Three Israelis were killed by a rocket fired from Gaza on Thursday.

Dance Dance Revolution and One Big Reason Why Businesses ...

Image of Vinyl Record on Player

The last time I was in Texas for the South by Southwest festival, one of the highlights of my trip was watching Pace Smith play a video game called Dance Dance Revolution.

She used to play competitively, so her gameplay is serious business. Her feet moved like two blurs. Jump. Jump. Twist. It was an impressive thing to watch.

It looked so cool, in fact, that I decided I wanted to learn to play DDR too. So I bought a copy for my Wii, put the plastic dance pad on my floor, and quickly realized how incompetent I was.

I watched the arrows scroll by and jabbed clumsily at the pad, but I was too slow. More arrows came. I missed those, then I missed the arrows that followed while I was trying to hit the arrows that had already passed.

If Dance Dance Revolution dancing were a business, Pace would be the one with all the clients and income she could stand. I, on the other hand, would be the crappy little online startup that couldn?t get any traffic, clients, or revenue. I was pulling out my hair in frustration, screaming, ?Why isn?t this working??

It seemed that Pace had some kind of inborn skill that I simply didn?t have. She knew something I didn?t know. Does any of this sound familiar?

If so, I?ll tell you why.

Doing business online is not all that different from playing Dance Dance Revolution

You know those overnight success stories you?ve heard about?
It?s not the whole story. Dig deeper and you?ll usually find people
who have busted their asses for years to get into a position
where things could take off.
~ Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson, 37 Signals

There?s nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
~ Johann Sebastian Bach

I know the notion that DDR and business aren?t dissimilar sounds absurd, but think about it for a second.

Pace wasn?t born being good at DDR. She was once where I was, as frustrated as I was, as disbelieving as I was that she could ever hit all of those fast-moving arrows.

And in the same way, if your business isn?t where you want it to be, you probably look up to big, successful sites and businesses online and think of how you?ll never be where they are. The blog you?re currently reading is a good example. Who among us feel we?ll ever be as successful as Copyblogger? Hell, who among us feel we?ll ever be a tenth as successful?

But what you may not really, truly understand ? at least on a conscious level ? is that not that long ago, Copyblogger had two subscribers, and both of them were Brian Clark.

What about Apple? That?s a big, successful company. Do you think Jobs and Wozniak always knew what they were doing, back in 1976 when they sold Apple I kits that didn?t even have keyboards? Ronald Wayne apparently didn?t think much of the little startup?s prospects, considering he sold out of it for $800.

So how did Steve Jobs turn it into a half-trillion dollar company and a cultural icon? He did it the same way that Pace got better at DDR.

The big (unsexy) secret of great success

To improve what he was doing, Steve Jobs practiced.

Both Jobs and Pace tried things and failed, tried things and failed. They learned from their mistakes and made small improvements every day, little by little.

One was on a dance pad and one was in a board room or talking design with Jony Ive, but the details don?t matter. The mastery of anything ? be it gaming or business ? comes only from practice.

Think about it. It wasn?t always smooth sailing for Apple. Sure, we look at the iPod, iPhone, iPad, and Mac lines today and think (rightly) that Apple is riding high. But do you remember the Apple Lisa? The Macintosh Portable? The ROKR? The Taligent OS? Yeah, neither does anyone else. Hell, Jobs even got kicked out of the company at one point ? and stayed out for ten years.

Talk about an epic fail.

And really, it?s not that different from failing out of a DDR song with the arrows screaming past at impossible speeds. Both seem like insurmountable challenges ? and even if you decide to face those challenges, they seem impossible pretty much the whole time you?re working on overcoming them.

But Apple didn?t give up, Jobs didn?t give up, and Pace didn?t give up. Little by little, day by day, they made tiny improvements.

And then one day, after more days of practice than they could count, both the DDR maestro and the Apple CEO achieved what used to seem flat-out impossible ? be it a multi-billion-dollar industry titan or a ten-foot song played perfectly on Expert.

If I ever expect to be as good at Pace on Dance Dance Revolution, I had to practice, just as she practiced.

And really, that?s incredibly obvious. Nobody could disagree with the sentence above. Nobody would propose that practice wasn?t necessary, and that I should just take a course that would make me fabulous overnight by revealing some top-secret insider trick that only DDR gurus knew. That would be ludicrous.

So why do we think that?s a smart way to become successful in business?

The problem with shortcuts and tricks

Losers have tons of variety. Champions just take pride in learning to hit the same old boring winning shots.
~ Vic Braden, tennis coach

If your site isn?t getting the traffic you need or if your business is failing, you don?t need the latest, greatest, most amazing, new, trendy, magical trick out there.

What you need to do is to practice the basics. You need to bore yourself silly by making small, daily improvements in the fundamentals of business that have existed for hundreds of years.

Every day, get better at learning about your audience, getting more deeply in touch with their needs and desires.

Every day, make your communication a little bit clearer.

Every day, try to meet another person or two who might one day turn into a friend, a customer, or a fan.

Every day, polish your products and services a little, and make them of more value to those who buy them.

Every day, figure out how you can tell more of the people who might like what you sell about what you sell.

If you?re online, make sure there is a clear path between your reader?s problem, the information your site greets that reader with, and what you?re offering for sale.

Make sure you have given them an obvious way to opt in to your email list and a reason for doing so. Make sure you treat that list well and communicate with it often. Then put yourself in the shoes of your reader and ask yourself if you?d buy what you have to offer, from you, at the price you?re asking. Then, because you?re biased, ask other people to do the same.

And on the flip side, stop worrying about the latest and greatest tricks.

All the hot new LinkedIn strategies in the world won?t do you any good if your offer is unclear or uninteresting.

All the Pinterest traffic in the world is useless if you don?t engage the people who might come to you through Pinterest and get them to join your mailing list.

All the ad retargeting and automated webinars and search engine optimization in the world will get you nowhere if your content sucks, or if you conduct your business like an amateur.

Do tricks work?

Of course many do, in the short term.

Instead, sit down at your desk, face your keyboard, and get back to doing the work that matters.

Do the work

If people knew how hard I worked to achieve my mastery,
it wouldn?t seem so wonderful after all.
~ Michelangelo

The unpleasant truth about mastering anything is that you must keep doing the work and practicing the fundamentals until you become excellent.

You don?t need the secret, amazing, known-only-to-gurus Easy Button. What you need is to put in the hours.

And so, in the absence of a Twitter Mastery course on Dance Dance Revolution, I simply went downstairs each day and failed my way through a few songs. It was slow going, and progress was hard to see. I just kept putting in the time and hoping that what felt like alchemy might produce results ? just like I did when my business was new, when I was banging my head against the wall and operating on faith that time would yield results.

And ? in the same way that I eventually made my first business dollar ? I finally passed a song on the Easy level. That first online profit was literally one dollar, and that first DDR success was literally one song. Neither was even in the same city as my goal ? but it was a start.

Then I tried a song or two that were harder. I screwed them up terribly. It was like the many times I made dumb, unsuccessful experiments in my business and failed. And yeah, it set me back, but I kept at it.

Practice makes perfect. Your mother had it right all along.

Oh yeah, heeeeeeeeeere?s Johnny!

Now, I think I?ve made my point, but there?s clearly no way I?m getting out of this post without giving you a video of me dancing nowadays, so here we go:

Can?t see the video above? Watch it on YouTube.

Now if I can just design the next iPad and become a billionaire.

Well, give it time.

P.S: I didn?t dance that song perfectly, and there is actually another level of difficulty above what you see there. That higher level is clearly impossible, so of course I?m working on it now.
