Kill Bill Volume II: Texas SB5 opponents issue a call to action against abortion bill

On June 25, a crowded gallery of more than 400 people screamed until the midnight hour chimed on Texas clocks after Texas senator Wendy Davis stood for more than 13 hours in protest of SB5.?SB5 seeks to prohibit abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, regulate first-trimester abortion clinics as ambulatory surgical centers and restrict access to medication abortions.?

Passage of the bill would shutter abortion facilities in Texas.

Senator Wendy Davis is a democrat that serves district 10 in the Lonestar state. A Harvard graduate, Davis has served as senator since 2008.

Some of the highlights?involved points of order in attempt to end the filibuster for Davis' specific comments regarding ultrasounds as well as an incident in which she adjusted her back brace.

Texas Governor Rick Perry decided to call a second session to attempt to pass the bill again on July 1.

Perry is personally supportive of the bill saying that it is lawmakers? "duty" to prevent abortions.?Even the woman who filibustered in the Senate the other day was born into difficult circumstances," Perry said. Davis herself began working at 14 to help support her single mother and became a teenage mother herself before going on to Harvard."It's just unfortunate that she hasn't learned from her own example that every life must be given a chance to realize its full potential and that every life matters," Perry said.Davis said that by using her story, Perry demeaned the office that he owns via her Twitter account, @WendyDavisTexas.

Organizations are gearing up for another round of protesting on July 1 during the special session.

Rallies in Los Angeles, Sacramento, Chicago and of course Austin, Texas will take place on Monday in support of women's rights, according to Defend Women's Rights (DWR).?Calling it a "call to action," DWR says "the struggle isn't over." DWR joins Planned Parenthood and NARAL as supporters of the bill's defeat.?

Texas' Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst says that protests won't matter.?

?Believe me,? he told reporters. ?I have spent most of my time between about 4 a.m. on Wednesday morning and through yesterday making sure that when I give the order ? to clear the gallery, it gets done," said Dewhurst, reported the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

He also encouraged pro-life supports to tweet with the hashtag "#stand4life" to oppose the "#standwithWendy" hashtag on social media, reported the Telegram.

We will update as results from the special session are announced on Monday. Let us know in the comments what you think about the Texas bill.
