NHL's Islanders moving to Brooklyn in 2015

NEW YORK (AP) ? Now hockey is coming to Brooklyn.

The NHL's New York Islanders have agreed to move to the Barclays Center starting with the 2015-16 season.

"Hello Brooklyn!" Islanders owner Charles Wang said as he made the announcement at a news conference Wednesday. The lease agreement is for 25 years.

Officials in nearby Nassau County, N.Y., have struggled for years to come up with a plan to either renovate or build a new arena to replace the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which opened in 1972. Wang, the founder of a computer software company, presented a plan in 2003 for a privately funded multibillion-dollar development of housing, retail and a new arena on the property, but the proposal foundered amid community opposition.

Wang had long threatened to move the team from its home in Uniondale after the club's lease expired following the 2014-15 season. He complained that the dilapidated building is unsuited for a professional sports franchise.

The Barclays deal took seven months to complete and was finished Tuesday night, according to Wang, who said he had wanted to keep the team local.

"Brooklyn is big time and now we have the big-league sports to prove it," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the Nassau Coliseum for 16 violations of workplace health and safety standards. OSHA said workers had been exposed to asbestos. The areas were not accessible to the general public. It also found inadequately lighted exit routes and other violations.

A statement from SMG, the company that manages the Coliseum for Nassau County, said it would contest the citation. It said the asbestos issues had been remediated.

As recently as April, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Brooklyn might not be a viable destination for the Islanders because it's hard to reach for the team's fan base in Long Island and Queens. However, the team's announcement of a news conference at the Barclays Center trumpeted the fact that it is located "atop one of the largest transportation hubs in New York City ... accessible by 11 subway lines, the Long Island Rail Road, and 11 bus lines."

Last year, voters overwhelmingly rejected a referendum ? backed by Wang ? that would have allowed Nassau County to borrow $400 million to build a new hockey arena. Earlier this year, county officials announced they were seeking proposals to open the 77-acre parcel to any developer interested in proposing new ideas for the site. An announcement on those proposals was expected to be released any day.

County Executive Edward Mangano, who backed the referendum as a way of keeping the hockey team from leaving along with spurring economic development and job growth, had no immediate comment on the move.

Long Island fans seemed resigned to the move for a team that won the Stanley Cup every year from 1980 through 1983 but missed the playoffs last season.

"I wish they would stay on Long Island. I was an Islanders fan for many years and went to all the Stanley Cup wins," said Sandy Thomas, a former season-ticket holder. He added: "But the county and the town did not want to spend any money to support them. It's too much of a commute to go to Brooklyn to a game. I will watch it on television."

Michael Callahan of Huntington said it was a sad day for Nassau County, but "I will probably go to Brooklyn for a game. It is easily accessible by mass transit; that is a big plus. That is also one of the shortfalls of the Coliseum; there is no close train system. That is a big plus; Brooklyn is easy to get to."

4 Things Your Family Should Stop Paying For | Pregnancy Blog

Posted on 23. Oct, 2012 by Danielle Buffardi in Family

It?s amazing what we can get for free these days, it?s just that some of us aren?t aware that free things still exist.

If you find yourself paying for these four things, you?re paying too much. With a little help from us, we?ll turned you into a savvy shopper well on your way to saving your family money.

1. TV

In 2012, it?s ridiculous to pay for cable or satellite programming.

If you have a computer and a newer TV, chances are you need just one cable called an ?HDMI? cable that you plug into your laptop and connect to your TV and you?re good to go.

Whatever you want to watch is most likely available online through the station?s website and, with the HMDI cable, you?ll be able to watch it on your TV just like you would normally.

You also have other options such as Netflix and Hulu that allow you to stream their programming effortlessly through a box such as Roku or your DVD player.

With cable and satellite programming prices rising all the time, you?ll save your family thousands a year by cutting out premium TV.

2. Kids? Meals While Dining Out And Full Price Meals For You And Your Partner

Your children should eat free and you should never pay full price for a meal for you and your partner. There are tons of places offering dining coupons and free kids? meals daily and your family should get in on those deals.

With thousands of restaurants offering a newsletter via email, you?re missing out if you?re not signing up.

To sign up, simply go to the website of your most visited restaurants and provide them with your email address.

Chances are, you?ll get a thank you coupon just for becoming a member of their email list and you?ll also start receiving coupons for when your family dines out.

If your favorite restaurants have rewards cards, then you should sign up for and use those as well. As you accumulate points, you?ll receive money (or other rewards such a free desserts) on the card that you can use for future meals.

You should also take a skip over to MyKidsEatFree.com and check out other restaurants in your area that you may not have known offer free kids? meals.

3. Books

I know, I know ? this is a touchy one. Some of us still thoroughly enjoy holding a book in our hands while others find bliss in being able to read digitally.

For those of us with eReaders, there?s a wealth of free eBooks just waiting to be downloaded and read. If you aren?t savvy enough to know some of the websites, we?ve got you covered.

Start with Project Gutenburg, they have thousands of free eBooks for every reading device and smartphone imaginable, and if you don?t find some that you like there (highly unlikely) they provide an easy-to-find link that takes you to their resource page that hosts tons of other websites as to where you can find free downloadable books.

Also, you should check out your local library?s website. Most libraries are now letting members borrow eBooks for a specified amount of time.

And speaking of our local libraries, they are a goldmine for those of us who still want to hold a book while we read. They usually always order new releases so if there?s a hot new trilogy coming out and you simply can?t wait to get your hands on it, chances are your local library has it and you can read it for free.

4. Family Entertainment

Right in my little state of Rhode Island, there are tons of free events for families and kids going on daily.

Everywhere from my local library, to local parks, and even some nearby colleges hold events that my family and I can enjoy totally free of charge.

If you?re not sure of your local happenings, then start at your town?s Chamber of Commerce website, or find your town hall?s website, even see if your town has its own website (I bet it does).

From there, I would suggest signing up for their email list so you can be alerted of future family happenings that you and yours might like to attend.

Also, check out Craigslist.org for family events and entertainment. Since it?s free to post there, many small businesses and local shops place their events there to get the word out.

Healthy behaviors in midlife significantly increase odds of successful aging

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Engaging in a combination of healthy behaviours, such as not smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, exercise, and eating fruits and vegetables daily makes it significantly more likely people will stay healthy as they age, according to a study published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).

"Our study shows the cumulative impact of healthy behaviours on successful aging -- the greater the number of healthy behaviours, the greater the benefit," writes Dr. S?verine Sabia, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, UCL (University College London), UK, with coauthors.

Successful aging was defined as maintaining the ability to function well with good mobility, cognitive skills, respiratory function, mental health and no chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, stroke or disability at age 60 years or older. Normal aging included people who were alive at the end of the 16-year study but who had chronic disease and/or lower scores on functioning and mental health.

"Among members of a large cohort of British men and women 42-63 years of age at baseline, all 4 healthy behaviours examined during midlife?were associated with greater odds of successfully aging during a 16-year follow-up," write the authors. "Compared with participants who engaged in no healthy behaviours, those who engaged in all 4 healthy behaviours had greater odds of aging successfully."

The study, by researchers in the UK and France, involved 5100 men and women from the Whitehall II study who did not have cancer, heart disease or stroke in the assessment phase during 1991-1994 and were followed to 2007-2009. Of the total participants, 549 died during follow-up, and 953 were classified as successfully aging while the remaining people aged normally. People in the successfully aging group were younger than the normally aging group (mean age 49.7 v. 51.3 yr), and 81% were married compared with 78% in the second group and 71% in the deceased group. Successful agers were more likely to have higher education than the normally aging group (32% v. 24%) and 18% in the deceased group. In the study population, 5% of people did not engage in any of the 4 healthy behaviours.

"Although individual healthy behaviours are moderately associated with successful aging, their combined impact is quite substantial. Multiple healthy behaviours appear to increase the chance of reaching old age disease-free and fully functional in an additive manner," conclude the authors.

Try This "Recipe" to Increase Productivity Over the Next Week

Try This "Recipe" to Increase Productivity Over the Next WeekIt's Monday morning. Is looking at your to-do list for the week overwhelming? Human Business Works CEO Chris Brogan presents this "recipe" to help you get more done over the next seven days and beyond (no cooking required).

Books like Getting Things Done are tireless bestsellers because we are buckling under the strain of our lives and our work load. We feel that we have more to deal with than ever before. But while that's true, it's also true that we act as our own worst enemy.

You Don't Realize You're Thwarting Your Own Chances

Let's look at what it takes to have optimum brain functionality:

  • Adequate rest. (How many hours did you sleep last night?)
  • A clear head. (How fast did you reach for your phone to check email, texts, social networks?)
  • A decent breakfast. (The number of people who don't eat within the first hour of waking up is staggering.)
  • A clear set of operating instructions. (Do you have any kind of template for how you'll arrange your months, weeks, days?)

Shortly after you wake up from a few hours of sleep (because you were catching up on blog reading and social networks and didn't realize the time), you grab your phone and read an email from an angry boss/customer/loved one. You have to rush to get dressed and out the door (we'll presume you showered), so you grab coffee and a croissant at the drive-through (if you work from home, who knows what you get). When you finally get to that "go" position at work, you flip open email and start there.

Does that describe you more often than not? Somewhat? Can you squint and see you?

You deserve so much better. And you can give it to yourself. And it doesn't take a whole lot of hard work. It does, however, take discipline and the willingness to set yourself up to succeed.

How to Get More Done: A Recipe

For the next 7 days, I want you to try this ritual as close to the details below as you can. Shoot for all seven days consistently, as it doesn't help if you start-and-stop. Ready?

Ingredients

  • No screens or radio after 9pm.
  • No phone first thing in the AM.
  • No news or radio first thing, either.
  • Right before bed, a notepad to jot nagging thoughts.
  • The willingness to try this for 7 days in a row.

Preparation

  1. At 9pm, have a glass of milk or almond milk or water, and a very small snack (preferably a small handful of nuts).
  2. Go to bed no later than 10 PM.
  3. Set your alarm for 6 AM(no snooze).
  4. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PHONE OR LAPTOP OR TABLET OR TV OR RADIO.
  5. Upon waking, take the first 5 to 10 minutes and just breathe deeply (it's totally reasonable to do just five minutes?it took me weeks to get up to 10 minutes). If your family makes this hard, hide in the bathroom or a closet (not really joking).
  6. Get a light breakfast within the first 30 minutes of waking.
  7. If you have the time, get in a 15-20 minute brisk walk or work out. Whatever your morning will allow. If you've got to get kids ready for school, that's practically a workout.
  8. Write down (or note in whatever way you want) the most important 3 tasks you want to accomplish today, or at least the name of the projects you need to tackle. Not every task. Not your huge to-do list. Just 3 that you need to deal with in some way.
  9. You have 3 minutes (total!) to look for "fires" in your inbox. That's all.
  10. Commute or get to work, whatever. The rest of the day is yours to execute on.

Serving Suggestions

You're telling your mind and spirit a handful of instructions in this challenge:

  • Rest will give me competitive power and extra willpower.
  • Giving myself time for my own clarity will improve my processing power.
  • Shutting out the craziness of other people's lives for a while will empower my own choices.
  • Knowing what matters to me and my day and also to those who I serve is a great first set of instructions to consider.
  • Breathing (maybe meditating) and moving my body are necessary (vital!) to juicing my systems.
  • And then, with all that on board, you can tackle your day in a FAR more powerful way. Will you get more done? Follow this recipe and I have zero doubt.

Biden Says Crying Baby Knows What Romney Win Would Bring

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.-What happens when a baby starts crying when Vice President Joe Biden is speaking at an event? Well the vice president finds a way to work that baby into his speech as he did in here Saturday afternoon, saying the crying baby knows how its future would pan out if Mitt Romney becomes president.

"They eliminate help for middle-class families who want to send their kids to college like that beautiful baby over there," Biden said as a baby cried at Ketterlinus Gymnasium Saturday. "I don't blame her for crying! I don't blame that baby for crying! That baby, that baby, that baby knows what's in store for him or her if Romney wins! I'm glad someone understands my speech!"

At the last stop of his two day tour through Florida, Biden highlighted the differences between President Obama and Romney, who he accused of deviating from the principles of the Republican Party and constructing a "morphed party."

"He's out of touch where I think this country is, where we move, and now, and now they're even abandoning the core organizing principle of this new Republican Party," he said. "This is not the Republican Party of ten years ago. This is not the Republican Party of 20 years ago. This is not even Mitt Romney's father's Republican Party. This is an alliance between the right in the Republican Party and the Tea Party-people I saw coming in here. I saw four or five of them."

As Biden's motorcade drove to Saturday's event, a few protesters dressed in colonial garb waved signs, including one that said "Bye-Bye Joe Biden Good Bye!"

The vice president touted the president's and his own performances in previous debates, even noting that his grandfather would be "happy" that "all of America knows what the word 'malarkey' means now," and ahead of the final presidential debate in Boca Raton, Fla., Monday, Biden stressed that President Obama has a strong character and will stand by his word.

"Folks, the stakes for this country are too high. They are too important. It's time for people standing for public office to stand up and say what they believe . Stand by what they say. Have the character of their convictions and state it," he said. "Presidential elections are about character and the character of your convictions and my guy he never tells you anything he doesn't mean and he doesn't do."

How do I file bankruptcy? Duties and Documents.

by Andy Miofsky, Illinois Bankruptcy Attorney

You can find a comprehensive list of duties related to filing chapter 7 and chapter 13 bankruptcy at 11 USC 521.? This list includes acts of filing documents with the court, delivering records to the trustee or creditors, doing some things and not doing other things.? Many of these terms have specific meaning related to bankruptcy law and local rules and procedures vary across the county. You should always consult an attorney for bankruptcy assistance.

HERE IS AN ABRIDGED LIST of things a debtor is required to file at various times during most cases:

  • a schedule of assets and liabilities;
  • a schedule of current income and expenditures;
  • a statement of the debtor?s financial affairs;
  • a certificate from an attorney or a petition preparer indicating that such person delivered ?the notice that is required by section 11 USC 342 (b) or that the notice was received and read by debtor;
  • payment advices or other proof of payment received within 60 days before the date of the filing of the petition;
  • an itemized statement of the amount of monthly net income;
  • a statement disclosing reasonably anticipated increases in income or expenditures over the 12-month period following the date of the filing of the petition;
  • a statement regarding retaining or surrendering property that serves as collateral for debt and, if applicable, specifying whether that property is exempt, will be redeemed or the debt will be reaffirmed;
  • a certificate from an approved credit counseling agency that provided debtor services under section 109 (h), and a copy of a debt repayment plan, if one was suggested;
  • a record of interest a debtor has in an education IRA or State tuition program;
  • each required Federal income tax return and any amendments while the bankruptcy case is pending;
  • each required Federal income tax return and any amendments that had not been filed during the 3-year period ending on the date of the commencement of the case;
  • in chapter 13 cases file an annual statement of income and expenditures and of monthly income.

HERE ARE A FEW additional documents a bankruptcy debtor must provide to the trustee:

  • the Federal income tax return that was required and was filed for the most recent tax year ending immediately before debtor filed bankruptcy, and provide a copy to any creditor that timely requests a copy;
  • documents or information that establishes the identity of the debtor.

HERE IS A SHORT LIST of things a debtor shall do while in bankruptcy:

  • cooperate with the trustee as necessary to enable the trustee to perform the trustee?s duties;
  • deliver to the trustee all property of the estate and any recorded information;
  • appear at a hearing required to reaffirm a debt;
  • continue to perform any duties debtor may have as administrator of an employee benefit plan unless a trustee is appointed;
  • perform the intention debtor stated regarding property that serves as collateral for debt.

WHILE IN BANKRUPTCY a debtor shall not keep personal property that is subject to a secured debt without reaffirming the property pursuant to section 524 (c) or redeeming the property under section 722.

Packed court as Costa captain hears evidence

An Italian court will decide if Francesco Schettino, the captain of the capsized Costa Concordia cruise ship, should face a full trial next year for the deaths of 32 people. NBC's Claudio Lavanga reports.

By Claudio Lavanga, NBC News

GROSSETO, Italy -- The captain of the Costa Concordia cruise ship that crashed into an Italian reef appeared in court Monday to hear the evidence against him, while hundreds of passengers who survived the deadly shipwreck and the families of those who died in it showed up just "to look him in the eye."

The case of Francesco Schettino, 51, was of such enormous interest that a theater had to be turned into a courtroom in the Tuscan city of Grosseto to accommodate all those who had a legitimate claim to be at the closed-door hearing over the disaster.

As dozens of experts, lawyers and prosecutors packed the building, all eyes were on Schettino, who returned to Tuscany for the first time since his arrest to, in his own words, ?Face my accusers.?

In the next few days, Schettino, the eight other people accused, and the many survivors and families of victims, will learn if he will face charges over the deaths of 32 people after his ship run aground off Giglio island on Jan. 13.

Schettino?is?accused of manslaughter, causing the shipwreck and abandoning ship while passengers and crew were still aboard. He denies the accusations and has not been charged. Any trial is unlikely to begin before next year.?

?The sooner we can resolve it, the sooner the victims can get on with their lives, they can put this behind them. ... We are anxious to do that, but not so anxious to compromise on our will to change the industry for better standards,? John Arthur Eaves, Jr., an Alabama-based lawyer representing several American survivors of the disaster, told NBC News.

Monday?s hearing was the first and most important in a preliminary trial, aimed at establishing who should be indicted over the disaster.

Over the next few days experts, who were appointed at an earlier hearing in March, will present their analysis of the data retrieved from the black box, audio recordings and other on-board equipment.

The hearing is off limits to the media, and the only way to learn what is happening inside is through lawyers and witnesses who emerge from the theater during breaks.

Dramatic opening
Schettino himself has become a lightning rod for international?disdain?for having left the ship before everyone was evacuated.

As befitting a star attraction, the captain arrived Monday at the makeshift courthouse through the back door in a car with darkened windows.

Costa Concordia captain admits he was 'distracted' by phone call

"Schettino looked like he just walked out of a fashion magazine. He was dressed in a black suit, black tie, and was very tanned. He didn't betray any emotion, and took many notes,? Eaves told NBC.

Even the weather added to the sense of drama.

A massive storm, nicknamed Cleopatra by Italian meteorologists, hit Grosseto a couple of hours after the hearing began, dumping rain on members of the media waiting outside.

A group of German survivors said Schettino was seen biting his nails, and another witness claimed to have seen him shaking hands with another survivor.

"We want to look him in the eye to see how he will react to the accusations," said survivor Michael Liessen, 50, who was attending with his wife.?

Schettino is one of nine people facing charges, although eyewitnesses, leaked audio and video recordings, a pre-trial report and even the liner?s owners, Costa Crociere (a subsidiary of Miami-based Carnival), appeared to put the blame squarely on him.

Wider fault?
However, Eaves, the American lawyer, suggested the fault may lie wider.

"It was just said in court that musicians on board had more safety training than other crew members," Eaves told NBC.

Costa Concordia cruise ship captain says sacking unfair

?We are not going to save lives if we don?t change the standards in the whole industry, not only of this particular captain,? he added.

Remo Casilli / Reuters

The Costa Concordia, carrying more than 4,200 passengers, ran aground Jan. 13 off the coast of Italy killing 32 people - including two Americans.

It is alleged Schettino was in command when he steered the gigantic ship too close to Giglio coastline, allegedly to perform a maritime salute to grant a favor to the ship?s head master, who was originally from the island.

The Concordia hit a reef, tearing a 160-ft. gash in her hull, taking in water and eventually running aground yards from the island?s port.

Video taken by passengers at the time showed scenes of chaos and confusion as the Costa Concordia started to list heavily.

In the intervening months, Schettino has sought to restore his reputation and set the record straight by giving his version of events.

His strategy has not met with widespread approval.

An angry member of an Italian consumer association told NBC News it would be raising a formal objection to Schettino?s presence in court.

?We are losing sight of the victims of this tragedy, but they could line the pockets of the shamed captain,? the member said.

Many questions
Expert evidence will have to address many questions, among them:

Did Schettino make a personal and fatal mistake in taking the ship too close to the island, or should, as he claims, the blame be shared with other crew members?

Six months after the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster, some of the survivors say that they have learned the cruise industry has a "lack of oversight." Hundreds of survivors are challenging the settlements offered to them and calling for an overhaul of the industry.? Rock Center's Harry Smith reports.

Did Schettino voluntarily abandon the ship hours before all passengers were evacuated?

Did he delay the call to abandon the ship, further endangering passengers?

Did he really save hundreds of lives by steering the ship as close as possible to the coast, as he claims, guided by a ?divine hand??

A pre-trial report, leaked to Italian media weeks before the trial, places much of the blame on Schettino.

Costa Concordia disaster spawns shipwreck tourism for Italian island

The 270-page report, compiled by maritime experts appointed by the court, reveals that the captain abandoned the Costa Concordia hours before the last of the passengers had reached safety and was slow in issuing the order to abandon ship and alerting port authorities.

But the experts -- two admirals and two engineers -- also note that evacuation drills had not been undertaken by all passengers on the ship and not all crew members understood Italian, the operating language of the liner.

?You find a consistent pattern of a lack of discipline on crew training, on the design of the vessel, on the communication problems. They go back to standards that were set up by Carnival in the United States. This captain made a horrible mistake, but we are not going to save lives if we don?t change the standards in the whole industry, not only of this particular captain,? Eaves said.

An Indonesian helmsman, for instance, failed twice to understand orders, veering to the right instead of the left as he was told by Schettino, who joked he should pay closer attention or ?we will go on the rocks,? only minutes before they dram aground.

A local newspaper said Monday the captain?s lawyers told the judge and prosecutors to ?consider the position of the helmsman.?

Schettino, they seem to suggest, was not the only one to blame.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Translation of social ideas into the language of HR and ...

As we are having again another?Google Hangout session on the HR topic this Wednesday (see this Facebook and/or this Google event) I just wanted to share with you my views on how I see the appreciation of Enterprise 2.0 within the HR sphere. Actually these notes of mine are the English answers I have given to Marco Minghetti of ?Il sole 24 ore? in the preparation to the Social Business Forum 2012. But as Italian is not everybody?s first language I am happy to share this with you.

Enterprise 2.0 (McAfee); Management 2.0 (Hamel); Social Organization (Bradley/McDonald): which is the best definition for the new model of 2.0 organization in the ?social business era?? How important is the idea of ?community? in this new model?

The key idea of the future organizational model is certainly turning around Gary Hamel?s systemic perceptions of a changing environment for the enterprises and the need to adapt fast and effectively to it. From this point of view the ?2.0? or ?social business? way just determines a new mean to help resolving these new challenges.

For playing the 2.0 game communities are certainly a central part. Bradley/McDonald explain the surplus of digitally enabled communities to socially construct the adaption of the organization. They are describing a roadmap to successfully set in place a new form of organization that is more effective in changing to environmental factors because of the use of social technology.

Last but not least McAfee defined the principles of how those social technologies are working and how they are generating value.

Summarizing ? none of these definitions are intended to define the ?2.0 organization in the social business era? because it?s not the technology that defines a new culture ? but that is an enabler for organizational change as well as a mean for organize in a more adaptive way. If we question which of the definitions helps best to advance the discussion and the adoption to these practices, then I would point to Gary Hamel. Because to advance the topic towards the next level it is important to acknowledge the organizational development perspective for the topic.

The new ?social? mindset for 2.0 organization requires a brand new set of managerial principles: openness, co-creation, collaboration? Which are the most important? And how you define them?

Personally I do not believe that ?social? is defining the needed ?managerial principles? but the overall increasing complexity and globally changing nature of business. Enterprises are complex adaptive systems and ?social technology? is a way to answer the business demands in a new and more effective way.

Therefore ? the nature of business requires already a more open, adaptive and collaborative way of organizing and coordinating the value generation in the enterprise. For this I like to return to Hamel?s ?21st management challenges?:

  • To advance organizations from a deadlocked state you need unconventional ideas and a corporate environment where those ideas get heard (democracy of ideas)
  • To move forward you need to turn ?ordinary employees into extraordinary innovators (amplify human imagination)
  • To avoid getting stuck we need a decision making process that is more directed by market principle than hierarchical allocation issues (dynamically reallocate resources)
  • To generate a new surplus in terms of efficiency and efficacy we need to harvest the positive benefits of an open and collaborative environment (aggregate collective wisdom)

The installation of ?social technology? enforces this demand ? as it supports openness and collaboration as well as it needs openness and collaboration to realize its added value (network effects).

Which kind of leadership does a 2.0 organization need?

I would like to cite five attributes mentioned in a essay by Russ Roberts and Paul Hirsch in a pre-social-age-book on the future of HR management by Loosey/Meisinger/Ulrich in 2005:

?Highly successful leaders posses five key attributes:
1. They are driven by a strong, personal vision of effective leadership.
2. They lay out a vision of success and engage others in the process of how to achieve it.
3. They are firmly rooted in the values and behaviors required of them.
4. They muster the courage to do what?s right and necessary.
5. They are modest, servant leaders dedicated to enabling their people to succeed.?

All of these characteristics are perfectly applying to the needed managerial principals of a ?social technology enabled? organization ? maybe paired with the appreciation that social technology is the enabler for the effective implementation of these principles.

The HR managers are often indicated as the most hostile to management 2.0. Is it true? And why?

I would not say that they are hostile to new ways of management and the advancements to make the organization more effective. Especially as those ideas are being discussed within the HR and OD sphere already quite some time ? and even before the age of social. But the HR is mostly disconnected to the beliefs and appreciations of the social technology as a mean for cultural change and change enabler.

The reasons for this is also related to the way of discussing the potentials of Enterprise 2.0 and Social Business as the new savior for the future of the enterprise. I think HR has already been involved in to many technology based approaches to advance the enterprise to a more collaborative and adaptive state (look at the Human Capital Management, E-Learning and Groupware approaches) but that failed to achieve the promised results.

In parts the social technology also brings disruption towards the function of HR ? as social networks bring transparency towards the company?s capabilities. So for finding the right staff member for my next project I do not need to ask HR anymore, but can eventually look into the tag cloud of competencies in the corporate social network to identify the right person. Therefore social technology also redefines the scope of HR which makes is menacing.

Social learning, Internal communication, change management: which are the HR processes more involved in the transformation of the ?hierarchical? companies in ?social organizations??

The journey towards the new form of organization enabled by social technology is an evolutionary process ? starting with enabling peers to understand the benefits of social technology, involving continuously more people into the socially enabled interaction and collaboration and eventually redefining the way of working and helping people to adapt to the new way of working. Therefore all of the mentioned task are important at different stages of the transformational process. And the order of the above mentioned terms shows IMHO already the right sequence.

Do you know some real success stories of new HR processes and tools consistent with the new 2.0 management model ?

As I am not taking in account the examples of social business technology and projects selling companies like IBM or CSC (because of their need to set an example of social business practice) as well as not the medium-sized company examples like in Germany Synaxon or Westerflex (because of their more entrepreneurial organization structure) I do not know of any success story yet. This is also difficult as most of the E20/Social Business initiative are just at the evolutionary stage of mastering the adoption curve and have not yet a transformational impact on the company.

But there are examples where the appreciation of the project and its effects on the organization are understood by HR and OD departments. For example in companies like Deutsche Telekom, Continental AG, Robert Bosch but also St. Germain or Alcatel-Lucent the E20 initiatives are supported by the HR department ? with a clear scope on the transformational impact.

So ? I think that for most of the matured projects (with the key characteristic of having overcome the tipping point and being perceived as a new way to solve business relevant communication and
collaboration challenges) HR will not miss giving the initiatives a second look and get involved within the next 12 month.

What about the ROI of an HR Department organized in a 2.0 way?

While most of the HR people have not yet taken the first step in taking any appreciation of the change enabling role of the E20 project, it is even quite more challenging to talk about the ROI of an HR 2.0 approach. As with all ROI related discussions it is important to have a business purpose first in order not to talk about a bubble generation. So disassembling HR to its key functions brings up the following three general purposes:

  • Finding the right staff by employer branding and recruitment processes ? social practices can enhanced both the employer branding as well as the recruitment process by the power of the masses. The key focus is on having the co-workers positioning and promoting the enterprise within their personal social networks as well as making their capabilities and competencies more accurately accessible throughout the activity tracking and tagging in internal social networks. This supports the reach and authenticity of the employer brand as well as a better performance in finding the right people. It even increases the corporate (and therefore HR!) performance on the secondary (network effects related) level as it involves the individual into the participatory process of a socially constructed corporate reality.
  • Helping to equip the human resources with the right capabilities and competences by training and development ? social initiatives are fostering the informal learning processes by micro-contents being shared and spread all over the internal social network as well as collaborative documentation efforts giving corporate knowledge at one?s fingertip. With the successful implementation of corporate knowledge environments and adhoc knowledge sharing about insights from business processes and activities the need for top-down organized training and personal knowledge as well as skill development lessens. This leads to cost reduction but also disruption that needs to be accepted by HR.
  • Aligning the individual talent development with leadership and culture visions ? The last but not least HR purpose is to build the corporate community as a positive as well as forward thinking and challenges taking group of people. As social networks increase the connections within the company, bring transparency to business activities and support the ?we?-feeling amongst the staff, it helps to develop towards a more empathic culture within the corporation. And this is set up much more sustainable than any onetime corporate event or corporate identification program.

So closing these reflections leaves out to say that the big challenge for the social business initiatives is to translate the social ideas into the language of HR and Organizational Development as these are the parties to get involved during the maturity stage of the E20 initiative. And both parties are perfectly equipped with visions for new forms of organization but are missing effective tools and means to implement these ? and social technology represents these means.

make money online: Several Steps To Achieving Internet Marketing ...

There has probably never been another venue in history presenting as much opportunity to earn as the internet. People are making big money here every single day. And while it isn't automatic that you will be the next one, you just never know unless you try. Let's go over some tips you can use to market your business to get you started.

One strategy that you can do when it comes to Internet marketing is to offer strong guarantees about your product. People are encouraged to buy when they read strong guarantees. For example you can have a headline that states, "How to lose three to four pounds in two days". Adding testimonials to these guarantees will also help in adding credibility.

Get more people to visit your website by making sure that your content is easy to read and relevant to what you are selling or showcasing. Also make it easy to find. Your domain name should be simple and self explanatory. By following these basic principals you are on the right track toward a successful website.

When the holidays are around the corner, which they always seem to be, start doing your research! Try compiling holiday review posts at least 2 months in advance of the big holidays and one month before the smaller ones. For example, put together a "Great Gifts for Father's Day" post in April or May.

If one is new to internet marketing they should look up some information that gives useful strategies to attract the audiences attention. The internet itself can be a good place to start the hunt for that information. Putting the effort forth to make sure one puts together at attractive marketing strategy will improve the returns seen and reward the extra effort.

Make sure you take the time to choose the right advertisements. You should try to find advertisements that you think suit your audience. Additionally, you should find ads that look good as they may attract attention from your visitors. Choosing the right ads can make the difference in your business venture.

When you're designing your emails, make sure you test them out. Make free accounts on sites like Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail, etc. and send the email to those accounts and see what it looks like before you send it out to the customers. This will let you see if anything comes up screwy and fix it before your customers see the problems.

You should always hire other people to do all of the small work for you so that you have time to focus on the larger things. Reading and responding to emails, fielding questions, and requesting proposals are all things that you can get someone else to do instead of trying to do them yourself.

When it comes to having the most informed customers you can in Internet business, it is important that you work to create a thorough FAQ section on your site. Even if you're only selling one or two products, include information about payments, returns, complaints, and other information your customers need to know.

Create a MySpace page, which can help get the word out on your company. Try to friend as many people as possible, as their friends will be able to view and access your page as well. Keep your page as neat as possible, highlighting the services and advantages that you provide to your customer.

Your ad should have the word "guaranteed" somewhere within it. Your customers need to be reassured that your product is not only worth the asking price, but will last for years to come. Your product should come with an assurance of quality every single time, since it demonstrates that you are proud to stand by your product.

As summarized in the beginning of the article, internet marketing is simply conducting a variety of business purposes on the world wide web. That is a very simplified summary, but this article expanded on the different uses and purposes. By understanding what it is and how it works, you can put this information to good use in your business.

The subjects of cars and bars are intertwined at Toronado in North Park, which is named after the classic 1966 Oldsmobile coupe as well as the original Toronado craft beer bar in San Francisco.

Shortly before production of the vehicle made its last hurrah in 1992, beer aficionados up north were catching on to the micro-brewing scene and flocking to Toronado on Haight Street for their Chimay fixes. The bar, now 25 years old, remains a legend while taking on a second set of roots in San Diego.

Launched four years ago by a former employee of Toronado in San Francisco, the local incarnation features more than 50 craft beers on tap, all discounted at $1 off during daily happy hour. Most are regularly priced at $5.50, including Evil Dead Red by AleSmith Brewing Company, a limited-production brew that tends to come around for the Halloween season.

Perhaps it was because I started drinking this vivid-mahogany ale on an empty stomach that I became quickly woozy. Or maybe it was too early in the day to start dabbling in the suds. But by the time I was halfway through the glass, the beer?s 6.6 percent alcohol content had me feeling as though I had kicked back double the amount. As is the case with craft beer, you always get more bang for the buck, especially when the flavor is this smooth and finishes with an addicting semi-bitter snap.

The draft menu hangs prominently above the bar, an easy read without having to squint. Other standouts, had I not been driving, was Duchesse De Bourgogne, another red ale, but with tart and fruity notes that sells for only $8. I?m also a fan of Blind Pig IPA, Feeding Frenzy and Damnation, all of which were staring me in the face while exercising restraint. Pass the food menu, please.

A couple of skewers loaded with unctuous chili-spiced pork belly became the next best vice. The dish costs $6, priced considerably lower than what you will find at many restaurants around town that sling pork belly in smaller quantities. Actually, the entire food menu brims with good grub, such as charcuterie plates, gourmet burgers and assorted sausage sandwiches. It?s exactly the kind of food that belongs with sturdy beers.

A musician I rubbed elbows with at the bar summed up Toronado?s atmosphere aptly, saying that the high ceilings and wood tables remind him of a back-East establishment, with a solid feel and friendly folks running the joint. The only difference is that liquor and wine are not served. No big deal. Just connect with a flavorsome brew, throw a buck in the juke box and you won?t even notice.

RATINGS:

Drinks: 5

Craft beer rules the day here. The selection covers all bases, with a rotating list of more than 50 beers on tap. A large number of bottles are also available.

Food: 5

The menu is authored by a professional chef and features a variety of burgers, sausages and skewers. The pork belly with spiced chili sauce and coleslaw was impressive.

Value: 4

Tap beers are $1 off during happy hour, a swell deal considering that they normally average $5.50. Also, on Mondays from 6 p.m. to closing, all local drafts are $3.

Service: 5

With dizzying beer choices, the bartender was quick to explain their characteristics and from where they originate. Food service was also speedy.

Duration: 5

Instead of waiting for other happy hours to kick in late in the day, Toronado gives us an earlier start, catering to those of us who can handle midday drinking.

ASUS' TAICHI convertible laptop hits the FCC

ASUS Tai Chi convertible laptop hits the FCC

If 2012 was the year of the Ultrabook, 2013's going to be remembered by the massive proliferation of laptop / tablet hybrids. One such convertible that's just been given full marks by the FCC is ASUS' TAICHI, an 11.6 or 13.3-inch unit that's packing an Ivy Bridge Core i7, 4GB RAM and, most notably, a display on both sides of its lid. While there's no official word from the company on a launch date, now that the government has given a thumbs up, it can't be too much further out. Plausibly, a rogue Amazon listing has pegged the 11.6-inch model as costing $1,300 and arriving on October 26th, alongside Windows 8.

Thoughtful.org Launches To Connect Brands And Celebrities To Shake Up Social Good

photoHere's the deal, I have some experience in the realm of trying to gather a bunch of folks around a cause to make an actual difference in the world for others. Over the past few years, I've seen quite a few "campaigns" shake up things on Twitter and Facebook that blew my mind, when it comes to raising money or awareness around important causes. Today, a new service called Thoughtful.org has launched and I find it to be quite brilliant. Its founder, Derek Rey, has some experience matching brands up with celebrities from his previous startup, Ad.ly. I wasn't really a fan of anyone, let alone celebrities, tweeting out links to things that they knew nothing about, or really cared about at all. It seems like Rey has found the right mix of Ad.ly's original model and something that is infinitely more impactful and heartwarming.
