4 Things Your Family Should Stop Paying For | Pregnancy Blog

Posted on 23. Oct, 2012 by Danielle Buffardi in Family

It?s amazing what we can get for free these days, it?s just that some of us aren?t aware that free things still exist.

If you find yourself paying for these four things, you?re paying too much. With a little help from us, we?ll turned you into a savvy shopper well on your way to saving your family money.

1. TV

In 2012, it?s ridiculous to pay for cable or satellite programming.

If you have a computer and a newer TV, chances are you need just one cable called an ?HDMI? cable that you plug into your laptop and connect to your TV and you?re good to go.

Whatever you want to watch is most likely available online through the station?s website and, with the HMDI cable, you?ll be able to watch it on your TV just like you would normally.

You also have other options such as Netflix and Hulu that allow you to stream their programming effortlessly through a box such as Roku or your DVD player.

With cable and satellite programming prices rising all the time, you?ll save your family thousands a year by cutting out premium TV.

2. Kids? Meals While Dining Out And Full Price Meals For You And Your Partner

Your children should eat free and you should never pay full price for a meal for you and your partner. There are tons of places offering dining coupons and free kids? meals daily and your family should get in on those deals.

With thousands of restaurants offering a newsletter via email, you?re missing out if you?re not signing up.

To sign up, simply go to the website of your most visited restaurants and provide them with your email address.

Chances are, you?ll get a thank you coupon just for becoming a member of their email list and you?ll also start receiving coupons for when your family dines out.

If your favorite restaurants have rewards cards, then you should sign up for and use those as well. As you accumulate points, you?ll receive money (or other rewards such a free desserts) on the card that you can use for future meals.

You should also take a skip over to MyKidsEatFree.com and check out other restaurants in your area that you may not have known offer free kids? meals.

3. Books

I know, I know ? this is a touchy one. Some of us still thoroughly enjoy holding a book in our hands while others find bliss in being able to read digitally.

For those of us with eReaders, there?s a wealth of free eBooks just waiting to be downloaded and read. If you aren?t savvy enough to know some of the websites, we?ve got you covered.

Start with Project Gutenburg, they have thousands of free eBooks for every reading device and smartphone imaginable, and if you don?t find some that you like there (highly unlikely) they provide an easy-to-find link that takes you to their resource page that hosts tons of other websites as to where you can find free downloadable books.

Also, you should check out your local library?s website. Most libraries are now letting members borrow eBooks for a specified amount of time.

And speaking of our local libraries, they are a goldmine for those of us who still want to hold a book while we read. They usually always order new releases so if there?s a hot new trilogy coming out and you simply can?t wait to get your hands on it, chances are your local library has it and you can read it for free.

4. Family Entertainment

Right in my little state of Rhode Island, there are tons of free events for families and kids going on daily.

Everywhere from my local library, to local parks, and even some nearby colleges hold events that my family and I can enjoy totally free of charge.

If you?re not sure of your local happenings, then start at your town?s Chamber of Commerce website, or find your town hall?s website, even see if your town has its own website (I bet it does).

From there, I would suggest signing up for their email list so you can be alerted of future family happenings that you and yours might like to attend.

Also, check out Craigslist.org for family events and entertainment. Since it?s free to post there, many small businesses and local shops place their events there to get the word out.
